Cruised up on my bike from the Tuolumne Grove trailhead to Medlicott Dome before flipping around yesterday. Conditions were great aside from scattered rain and a bit of hail later in the afternoon.
It's awesome that the NPS allows cyclists only for a day each year - no way I'd ride Tioga Rd on a normal day with all the RVs out there.
Conditions looked great on a bunch of domes - can't wait to come back and climb next month!

Was riding down hill towards fairveiw and came around a curve and almost clobbered some knuckle head lady riding on the wrong side of the road...a ranger in a truck was behind her telling her to get on the right side of the road...stoopid americans...great day to be in the meadow...saw a good sized bald eagle hunting on tenaya lake..

A friend has been asking me when the campgrounds will be open. Website is saying 7-15. Does anyone have an idea if they will open earlier?

I went over Tioga Pass today and there was very little snow anywhere. Pretty hard to believe it couldn’t be opened until this past weekend.

It likely wasn't the amount of snow on the ground, but rather the weather conditions that kept them from opening it. Snow flurries can turn into feet of snow very quickly in the Sierra Nevada. Combine that with a location in California where too many people do not know how to drive in the snow and do not have snow tires on their vehicles, and things get hairball very quickly. The park errors on the side of caution. In one snow storm near Wawona, it snowed 12 inches in an hour, and in that hour there were 35 car accidents between Wawona and Oakhurst. 2 of them with serious injuries. I can't tell you how many people from back east or some other cold place who came to Yosemite and ended up in an accident because they thought the few inches of snow was no big deal. Warm roads and heavy wet snow make for treacherous conditions.

Driving up tioga last week to the closed gate i noticed that cal trans had built rock and dirt berms on the shoulder of the road...Looked like it was done to keep cars from going over the side...? cheaper than guard rails...? I imagine one car sliding off the icy road up there could close the pass for a day..So why tempt fate by leaving the road open during a storm..?

I don’t know guys. I live in snow country and I think, from what I saw, the pass could have been safely opened quite a bit earlier.....just sayin.

I talked to some people about 2 weeks before the pass opened up that had ridden their bikes almost to the meadows. They said they were turned around because they had the road dug out doing repairs. With all the rain this year I could only imagine what happened to the road surface.
