Nationalism IS religion...

People send their children to be killed for books of fables as easily as flags wrapped around rotten empires.

I was merely stating a short opinion about both fervent religion and nationalism...

Cheers to you!

U.S. Ambassador to Panama John Feeley, a career diplomat and former Marine Corps helicopter pilot, has resigned, telling the State Department he no longer feels able to serve President Donald Trump.

Just a thought - maybe he could better serve his country by staying on.
Didn’t think Marines were quitters.

Also I think we are going to have a lot more choice and variety of domestic manufacturing in the coming years, due to changes in power production, proto-typing and robot assisted manufacturing
...which China will copy, if not be the source of, manufacturing costs will adjust accordingly, globally, no net change for the American worker.

DMT Loved everything you said up to:

...we have to find ways to meet in the middle and we have to be willing to actually move that way ourselves.

And while I do believe in compromise on many political issues, I feel that this is also a big watch out for others. Compromising and meeting in the middle on issues such as truth, science, fact, and clear social equality issues are partially why we are here at this moment, in this exact dilemma. That's how we end up with "alternative facts" and racism basically being accepted by roughly half of our population.

Americans need to get a whole hell of a lot more exposure to countries and cultures outside of America. The more you travel, the more you actually see how much the gap, and in many cases the anti-gap, between America and other countries has come. And it is not just a wealth gap, it is an education / critical thinking gap which is truly scary to me. I can honestly say there are several countries I would prefer to live in at this point. The most common thing I am on the receiving end from foreign nationals I work with is pity about how the U.S. is going. PITY

And before someone goes, "Then do it, leave!", I already "live" 50% outside of the U.S. due to my job and my retirement plans include residence outside of the U.S. While I am just a lowly biochemist, does America really want me to leave? Do you think it will be better off because of it? I am not saying I am all that, but I can't help to think I have contributed in many ways, professionally and socially, to this country.

So where does that leave us? Not sure to be honest. I haven't given up, but I think many educated Americans can see the writing on the wall and it doesn't suggest a good outcome for America.

Robotics might bring back some manufacturing to our shores, especially with the price of oil
resuming its inexorable climb, but probably not significantly.

Convince me otherwise.

why would anyone want to convince you of anything? you are using an anonymous avatar name made up specifically to "debate" this single issue, with no credibility and with demonstrated cowardice hiding behind your anonymous identity.

Whether or not someone can convince you is beside your apparent issue. The response to "the leader of the free world" being dismissive of large parts of that world, to the point of vulgarity, to being "blind hysteria" by "you liberals" sort of misses the point, doesn't it?

How are the people of the world convinced that American ideals have some special appeal, "liberty and justice for all"? when their elected leader describes many (most) of them as excrement.

Whatever your political leanings, whatever your own thoughts of the state of the referred to countries, how is a vulgar reference changing anything for the good, how does such a statement forward American interests in the world, how can such a statement be defended at all coming from the "leader of the free world"?

And why are trolls like JoeM, and make no mistake JoeM is a troll account set up specifically to shield the actual person posting from any connection to the opinions written on this forum, worthy of any reasoned response? Who cares what a troll thinks?

Is it not possible that said troll has something worthwhile to contribute?

Robotics have been around for decades, China knows them well.

Anyone uttering the word "robot" in a conversation about people losing jobs, getting jobs or bringing jobs here or there due to economics - they're clueless, they know zero about manufacturing.

A robot is an expensive, complicated, high volume production tool. A lot of jobs come in the door with the robot, and lot of money is going to need to be made to pay for it.

why would a troll feel the need to hide behind the anonymity?

why would a troll not actually have commitment to their convictions?

what does a troll suffer if they are demonstrably wrong, or worse, misleading?

no, a troll has nothing worthwhile to contribute, as demonstrated by their own act to dissociate themselves from their statements through the use of an avatar.

Isn't it interesting how worked up people get over someone who hasn't done much of anything as yet?

I'm pretty sure Canada has a point system for immigration. Maybe the US should adopt it to avoid shithole status.

JLP, I’m sure you are the final authority on robotics, but I’ve actually used them. A close friend
is the manufacturing genius who took a very large company struggling under the onus of a
luddite owner and turned the company around, largely thanks to robotics. Yes, the robots
take away certain jobs but they also save many others. In fact, this company brought quite a
a few back to SoCal after finding out that they couldn’t depend on the Chinese for the quality
they demanded. And, as I noted previously, rising oil prices can negate the advantages of
making things in Buttphukistan.

Ed, you and I feel no need to hide but people like DMT probably do have a legit reason to
remain incognito. After all, little people like you and I can’t fathom the onus of being beholden
to their fellow Illuminati. 😉

our transition to the third world, or actually second world status, began in the mid 1970s with the dismantling of the New Deal and the assault on labor.

It wasn't secret, you read about it in the business pages. Their idea was that workers made too much money if they could afford to send kids to school and buy houses. No, really, as unbelievable as that is. It really intensified under Reagan. The New Democrats were just as supportive. Bill Clinton fought tooth and nail for NAFTA, but when some of the old school Dems tried to pass the anti-scab Striker Replacement Bill, Clinton was off in Europe, couldn't, or wouldn't, be bothered to help there.
I swallowed my pride and joined this year. I'm now (shudder) a registered Democrat. Ugh.

Gary, would unions be faring any better under Hillary Clinton? Didn't Trump kill TPP? Isn't he talking about killing NAFTA? Isn't this what unions wanted?

The alleged Trump quote:

"Why do we want all these people from Africa here? They’re shithole countries ... We should have more people from Norway."

I think Trump's main problem is his words and Tweets utterly lack the nuance a skilled politician possesses. Is there any truth in his quote? Maybe so if he had phrased it thusly:

"Our immigration policy should continue to welcome merit based, humanitarian and asylum based immigration. But in part due to international terrorism concerns, unfettered immigration without adequate vetting and illegal immigration should be curtailed."

There, don't you feel better now?

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

"... but people like DMT probably do have a legit reason to remain incognito."

the "legit" reason is expressly to shield some part of their lives from the opinions they express on the Forum.

The other way of doing that is to use your real name and be careful of what you express, or at least not express what you don't want to stand up for in "real life."

If it were just that, GOOD! Bluntness can be welcome. But many of his 'tweets' instead show profound immaturity probably stemming from a deep inky black pool of insecurity. After 70+ years he still sometimes acts like a kid trying to bolster his ego with self adulation.

But I still don't see a monster, just a clown.
