You’ve sometimes expressed thoughts about the culture in which we live. For example, in Lee v. Weisman you wrote that we indeed live in a vulgar age. What do you think accounts for our present civic vulgarity?

Gee, I don’t know. I occasionally watch movies or television shows in which the f-word is used constantly, not by the criminal class but by supposedly elegant, well-educated, well-to-do people. The society I move in doesn’t behave that way. Who imagines this? Maybe here in California. I don’t know, you guys really talk this way?

Q. How would you characterize the role of the Supreme Court in American society, now that you’ve been a part of it for 24 years?

I think it’s a highly respected institution. It was when I came, and I don’t think I’ve destroyed it. I’ve been impressed that even when we come out with opinions that are highly unpopular or even highly-what should I say-emotion raising, the people accept them, as they should. The one that comes most to mind is the election case of Bush v. Gore. Nobody on the Court liked to wade into that controversy. But there was certainly no way that we could turn down the petition for certiorari. What are you going to say? The case isn’t important enough? And I think that the public ultimately realized that we had to take the case. … I was very, very proud of the way the Court’s reputation survived that, even though there are a lot of people who are probably still mad about it.

As the National Law journal reports, in the last term, Justice Samuel Alito recused himself from a Coca-Cola case because he owned stock in the company. Several days before the case, Alito unrecused himself after selling off his stock.

gee, the only people mad about are that are those who felt the Florida recounts should continue on until an absolute verified winner of the state's Elector Votes would determine the next US President instead of the Supreme Court making the arbitrary decision to stop the counting and award the Presidency to George Bush.

Yes counting chads is part of democracy being ugly but letting a divided court determine the Presidency instead was, imo, the worst decision is court history

2013 Majority of Supreme Court members millionaires

At least five and perhaps as many as eight of the nine members of the U.S. Supreme Court are millionaires according to recently released financial disclosures, and only two hold any consumer debt.

This whole 'locked thread' idea is funny.

I mean, the primary reason it came about is to reduce the political OT threads on ST. I can understand why CMac & Co. would want to do that, but this strategy clearly doesn't work.

It's not like there is any good reason to archive such threads by 'locking' them. Why not just nuke the f*#king things altogether?

Maybe there's a reason that isn't obvious to this mere ST user.

Bottom line is these kinds of OT threads are gonna happen. Far better to have them consolidated in fewer (preferably, one) threads, rather than spread across the site (i.e. the 'Ready for...' threads).

But again, perhaps there're other considerations in this I'm not privy to.

You do not have to a registered Dem, or Repub to vote

To vote in the California primary for Sanders I would have had to switch registration, didn't want to do that.

You can write in anybody

No need to, I'm voting for Gloria La Riva.

This will be about the 4th time I voted for a ticket with a woman on it. The first time was when Angela Davis ran for VP on the CPUSA ticket.

PotatoHead isn't Ron or Rokjox

Fritz knows him

He just comes on once in while to spew his vial hate.
He's shut down a bunch of threads, or the OP deleted them after he brought the thread down to level of sh#t throwing

He lies without hesitation, at first he told us that he was Political Science Teacher at some College, and was using my posts in his class for hysteria.

Then he was an engineer, then we find out he works some night shift

He comes on late at night when no will challenge him, or has the energy to get in a debate with another Chief.

The Mexicans did a CT scan of my brain after almost drowning and it looked like your picture.

About ten years ago, when a severe bout of depression threatened my legal career, my physician and the State Bar suggested that I see a neurologist to make sure I wasn't affected by, e.g., a brain tumor. The neurologist had a CT scan done. After reviewing the results, my physician said "the CT scan showed some brain atrophy, but I wouldn't worry about that."

Try dealing with all the possible implications of that statement.

Pew reported that Clinton is leading Trump among Catholic voters,

and Trump is partially to blame – much of the demographic that is supporting her are Latino Catholics, which Trump has insulted and offended throughout his campaign:

Currently, Clinton also holds a 17-point advantage among Catholic registered voters, driven largely by overwhelming support for Clinton among Latino Catholics. By contrast, at a similar point in the 2012 campaign, Catholics were closely divided between support for Obama (49%) and Romney (47%). Exit polls conducted on Election Day in 2012 found that Catholics ultimately split their votes between Obama (50%) and Romney (48%).

Well, John, that supports my hypothesis about why people vote Republican! :-) Although I'm probably the poster child for brain atrophy. Or is it brain apathy? Who cares.

Gary,

I've been laughing about that diagnosis for ten years, as I continue to prove its truth. I have a charger for my phone in my office, and a habit of forgetting the phone there. Consequently, I have an idiot sign reminding me of the phone on my monitor, on the light switch in my office, by the office door, and taped next to the grearshift in my car (saying, with due reagrd for the 1992 presidential campaign, "It's the phone, stupid!").

I still sometimes forget the phone in the office.

I was wrong.

One of my initial thoughts about pence was that unlike trump, at least he isn't bonkers,

Nope, he's bonkers, I was wrong. Earlier this year he signed a bill requiring funerals for fetuses.
