It kinda helps when someone actually takes it seriously...
Real the whole thread, it was so funny because people took it so seriously.

Uh, I did read the whole thread, back when it was posted.
The first response summed it up rather succinctly
(keep in mind that Disco Stu, The Maestro, theoncler,
dakine420 and Mark Stroeve were one and the same,
as demonstrated by the link I posted in that thread).

Hawkeye and Jaybro--- I agree with the opinions that threatening emails should be traced, if possible. But that option isn't always as feasible as some believe. Many internet whackos know how to cover their tracks. But an attempt should be made, yes.
However, posting the incident on the forum isn't something most women would want to do. Again, posting would entail a debate about whether she lied, flirted, insulted or led on the offender. Most girls don't want to go through that kind of thing. I wasn't aware of the problems with Mountain Man until a couple of days ago, when females educated me to their own experience. He had NOT bothered me.
Again, MM is not being accused of the earlier rape threats, by anyone including the "anonymous females". His alleged offenses were not anonymous and had a less aggressive tone to them. The ugly rape threats were several months ago and possibly had no connection to MM. The threats apparently came after a woman made a controversial post that upset the offender. MM wasn't involved in that discussion and, probably wouldn't have been offended by the post. (?)
Several have posted that MM could be forgiven for his inproprieties and I probably agree although I don't know all the details, since some women aren't, in fact, giving details. However, the individual who made the rape threats should be given a penalty worthy of the crime.
Sorry for hijacking your thread Hardman, the original Percocet thread was nuked and the posts relative to it seemed to move here.

so the email was annonymous.
there was a thread titled something about apocolypsenow will face the music.
it really did raise some uh dirt, not pretty. not throwin accusations here.
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=199558&msg=236570#msg236570
anyway, peace, love forgiveness. but sending someone an anonymous rape email is extremely sick and i have visions of
*edited out picture of a creepy guy in the news lately *
and a strong urge to purge the sickness. but a feeling of helplessness for those who keep this hidden.
i am reminded by a scene when my sister was in high school. my mom had all the kids in the car, (i was 11) and my sister was the oldest. we were driving by a corner house and there were about 15 HS age boys there throwin snowballs at my moms new station wagon. my mom stopped in the line of fire and rolls down the passenger side window to yell at these boys and my sister who happens to be seated there gets nailed in the face.
sis jumped out of the car, ran up to the offender, grabbed his collar and threw him down in the snow and proceeded to wash his face out with snow all the while cursin him. the looks on all the others face was priceless. they dropped their snowballs and their jaws almost hit the snow covered lawn as they stared in disbelief. my sister kicked some more snow at the offender lying in the snow and walked back to the car. she had single handedly stopped everything. i was careful about pissing her off after that.
i hope the ladies on the site can feel comfortable here.
peace

Hawkeye - great story about the snowball justice...
But did you have to post a picture of that creep who has already gotten way more
than his undeserved 15 minutes of fame? If you nuke, I promise more limericks.
Here's another:
A new sheriff in town usurped Batten
so sad that his cheerios got shat in
when an unNatural troll
on an un-sushi like roll
had his grandeur so suddenly flatten!

I don't.
I've decided to limit my posting to essentially nil. In fact because I have an edit button I'll probably delete this post in a day or 2. Sorry. So many personal attacks here even up front where you all can see it. My skin isn't that thick, and I'm creeped out.
It started when some anonymous person used my first name, my home town, my professional degrees to create a user name to post an obscene "recruitment ad" for research subjects for "high altitude research". Remember SueV MD PhD?. I do high altitude research at the location this poster used in their advert. I often use posting to recruit subjects for specific projects. How would you feel? This undermines my profession. Like Dr. Crimpie I've got a pretty serious day job.
Then someone called me a prick out of the blue in one of the bike threads and said I (I'm paraphrasing here) should jack off in front of the mirror and tell myself how great I was. This was someone who I had no previous interaction with.
Finally just recently in the rec.climbing thread someone took the time and effort to search me over at rec.climbing and (again I'm paraphrasing) call me "a turd in a punchbowl". Again someone whom I'd had no interaction with.
Nice talk.
I could understand it if I'd said something specifically to someone here and pissed them off, but I haven't. You play too rough and nasty over here for me.

I’m not excusing this kind of behavior, but I think there might be a couple of factors that might contribute to this kind of behavior:
1) ST is more of a biker bar than a martini bar and conversation tends to follow suit.
2) A lot of people here either do know each other or have had enough interaction with each other to feel comfortable making tongue in cheek comments and poke fun at each other. Sometimes there’s a bit of collateral damage when innocent bystanders are caught in the crossfire.
3) Internet posts are lousy at conveying intonation. Sometimes sarcasm comes across a bit more seriously than intended. (I don’t really think HK is an anal retentive, prick, nark, tool as I’ve indicated in other posts, but it kind of got under his skin and I enjoyed taking advantage of his good humored nature).
4) Our nicknames are (for the most part) androgynous. Hell, some of our real names are androgynous. I had a serious crush on Jody for months before I figured out he was a dude! Sometimes people might say things assuming they’re talking to a guy when in fact, they are not.

hk knott,
since this thead is in your honor, and we do not wish to see your head burst just yet, i deleted said sick man in picture. :)
looking for more limericks, but it also looks like there may be increased trolling activity on the horizon. those with sore mouths should refrain, hehe.
matisse,
that is really a bummer to hear. there are mostly good characters on here and occaisionally some get out of hand. it does seem like they are usually called out but not always. uncalled for comments like that are things i do not understand, but i dont claim to understand much, oh well.
i feel bad because with your research it sounds as though there are many here who could benefit by your knowledge and expertise, let alone the chance to share your personality. ST users who are decent folk are the losers. take care and good luck in your research.
I was wonderin though, since HK's head is expanding some, i wonder if you could comment on whether it is safe for him to travel to higher elevations? hehe
edit: neversurfaced, please provide a photo for ouch!, this sounds like to good of a chance to psas up (crush on jody) hehe
good comments BTW.

Just curious...I'm sure these things (cyber stalking, etc) happened in usenet (r.c) land, was the wild west nature of usenet so strong that threats of outing, violence, etc kept things in check?
Or was the community so small then that there were no issues?

BTW With two small daughters of my own, not much makes my blood boil quicker than stories of cyber creeps.

matisse, if it makes you feel any better, I was also called a 'turd in the punchbowl of life.'
But, considering the source, it actually made me laugh! Some cretins have quite the way with words, when it comes to thier petty little insults. Small minds.
