Kareem Abdul wrote a good article about this.
We are all shocked at this "unacceptable" behavior NOW, after he was scammed into getting recorded...
But the guy has been deplorable for decades, on the public record for all to see.
Add a little TMZ = BOOM OUTRAGE
I listened to deadspin's version of the conversation, I have to say I've heard much worse from just about ANY 80yr old man.

I'm sure the NBA will consider their brand, Not to mention the preponderance of dark skinned bodies their industry relies on, then will make an astute and pragmatic decision. Possibly even a moral one.
Stick with the pragmatic assumption.

but wait, there's more!
didn't major league baseball back in 99 make that Marjorie somebody sell her interest
in the Cincinatti Reds for making racist remarks?
maybe there is some grounds for the league to do something
he paid only 15 million for the Clippers, now worth 500 million
so making him sell would not seem to punish him?
make him shower with the players....somebody said that upthread

WEll, in any event at least she has gone to the beach. She does a lot of "interesting" things. Go to her page and view all 50 or so. She is pretty when she is not trying to dramatize her image.
Jerry Buss had plenty of young women girlfriend/archivists. Did he ever wind up in this kind of situation?
Must be why he was Doctor Buss, while Sterling is Attorney Sterling.

Pretty rude comment. I don't think the players would appreciate it. I'll tell Sheriff Shaq to look into it. Send him your address so he knows where to go to interview you.
Make him shower with Sandusky! Now we're talking.

The Clippers are the private property of Sterling. The NBA cannot force him to sell. If indeed the NBA forces him out instead of a combination of external pressures, Sterling has the bankroll to sue the sh#t out of the NBA and in a legal sense, he would most likely win. Luckily, with the advent of the viral video and the internet, Sterling's days are numbered.
Straight from the NBA By-Laws
Article 13
The Membership of a Member or the interest of any Owner may be terminated by a vote of three-fourths(3/4) of the Board of Governors.

If someone owned a McD's franchise, and a private call in which that person made racist comments was leaked to the press, I don't know what would happen. As with the Sterling situation, it would depend to large extent on what the franchise agreement said.
But absent some clear contractual right, it's not self evident that McD's could do anything.
And I'm not sure I see a contractual provision that says "if you get caught making private statements that were recorded without your knowledge and they get leaked and you were being racist, then you have to sell if we want you too . . . "
(Obviously the provisions would be general rather than specific as I wrote, but I'm not so sure that it's likely that there would be general provision that pick up what were intended to be, and ordinarily would would be, private private statements.)
I agree that the NBA and/or the public at large may make Sterling's ownership untenable, but that doesn't mean the NBA can necessarily exert legal pressure.
It has nothing to do with whether it was a private statement of not. This is not a court of law. This is not the first time he has been outed as a racist, but it will be his last. His conduct is detrimental to the NBA and its board can vote him out if he wants to.
The McD's analogy is valid as well. If you are harming the name and product that you are representing, you may lose your priviledge(yes, its a priveledge, not a right) to represent the company and sell its product.

In a nut shell:
Billionaire pays over a million bucks to (smokin hot worth every penny)
gold-digger to be seen with him at LAC games. Objects to her failure to
meet her agreement by posting pics of herself rubbing the Magic Johnson
instead of only him in 'public' while under contract. He was paying her to present the public with the illusion that she loved an 81yr old
rich white man.
Contracts 101.

here are the possible legal sanctions
according to Michael McCann, the director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute at the University of New Hampshire.
.
.
A fine "may be seen as the weak penalty," McCann says, "because Donald Sterling is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.9 billion." He adds that if it follows this path, the NBA would very likely donate the money to charity.
A suspension "would be a bolder step," McCann says. "It's one that the NBA hasn't taken but it's one that I think many people would find to be justified, especially his own players who are clearly upset by the remarks that he allegedly made."
An expulsion would mean that Sterling "would likely sue the NBA for breach of contract, his franchise agreement and potentially an antitrust claim," McCann says.
A long suspension would be one way the NBA could try to pressure Sterling into selling the team. But as McCann tells KPCC, the Clippers owner could make prolonged legal arguments over the fair value of the franchise.
