Hey alpine, I sent you an email to the address given here. My stupid browser wouldn't work with the contact link on your site.

Okel's greatest inspiration was in the way he approached his own death. It was a reflection of his climbing style - courageous, graceful and very calm. he was calling back the beta to us right up to the last minute. Those emails were both inspirational and insightful. If anybody has those handy (I'll have to scan a crashed drive but will do so if necessary) please post-up. I know dirt still has them. I think everyone who hasn't seen them will get something useful from them and will have yet another reason to stand in awe of JimO

PS I'll try to get some NC shots on here but mine are very old (70's-80's). I'm really enjoying the ones that are here already

edit: well, hm, I don't know why I can't post pics. I must be doing something wrong.
feel free to tell me how to do it...?
I guess I can put direct links, anyway, for now...

I went down there earlier this year and had a fantastic time, despite having a bum hand (cat bite - cellulitis - two days in the hospital!). I took a few pics...forgive me if I get the names/ratings wrong as I might have scribbled them down incorrectly!

Hey I don't live there anymore but I sure miss the way the damp granite still sticks to my shoes, steaming after the thunderstorms pass through. More on this later kids.

Sorry, no pictures.

Thought I would bump this with some recent stone pics...

My first time climbing at stone (although I have been wanting to climb it for years) and also my first time climbing slab. I loved every minute of it. I lead u-slot to gain the tree ledge, then we climbed the classic route the great arch. Its probably the easiest roped climb I have done to date, but one of my favorites. It was a little overcast and had rained the night before, but the rock wasn't wet and the rain held off until we finished the climb.

Click on the pics for bigger versions.

partner on the tree ledge at the bottom of the great arch, talk about a wave of granite!

Heading up to rumbling, laurel knob, or whitesides this weekend, should have some pics around this time next week.

In the early 90's I went to Whitesides for the first time with Bob Ordner. He sent me off on the first pitch. Somewhere around 150' there was the first pro. Got to give it to em, these southern boys got balls.

Buju,

I am in Durham these days and can confirm that the climbing in NC is absolutely stellar. Plus the New and Red are within driving distance.
I had a tiny bit of trouble at first finding partners (especially ones interested in more than just clipping bolts at the New), but really the lower density of climbers just means you NEVER have to wait in line.

Where are you going to school?

Cheers

I finished my undergrad at a small school in the NC mountains and I will say that the best single-pitch cragging in the country (maybe the world) lies in the southeast. If you haven't been, you have no idea what you're missing. And Oct/Nov are the two best months out there. So sick.
That being said, I'll never leave the west again.

Dogger1--

Great pictures, thanks.

I'm being lazy and not looking up "Sweet tea" you posted. But it looks awfully familiar. Is that up by Devils Courthouse? I feel I might have climbed that last year, late fall before it iced completely.

NC is special...
scary...
varied...
beautiful...
lush...
with all manner of climbing and home to the largest hunk of granite on the East Coast.
Leaves are about to be ON FIRE too...
Time to be out and about in the SE.

TAG ain't bad either.
