Without ever reading this thread I've been watching the body count build thinking that I would
eventually have to step in and actually explain quantitative easing. So when I finally decided to take the plunge tonight imagine my relief upon seeing that it was just some light entertainment.
But then my initial joy turned to sorrow when it became apparent that many here were taking it
seriously. Well, it was seriously a sad thing about those poor dough balls but not as sad as
the dough heads who sought to 'enlighten' Ron.

SLR,
where on the CDC site do you get the 10-20 figures?
Sounds a bit like the Seattle study, which was ludicrously flawed methodology.

Locker,
if you were wary at the ATM, if you were wary of being followed, if you were wary of who was at your door, then a gun might have changed the outcome.
It is not a magic talisman. It requires intelligent deployment.

I don't know...
I had my apartment broken into twice. It did make me feel uncomfortably vulnerable for a few days.
I have had men follow me as I was heading into an isolated area. Luckily I had the presence of mind one time to notice the person (coming in from a left flank position) and turn right back around before I was close to being in a dangerous predicament. Another time, when I noticed the dude trailing me several feet behind (in Fort Tryon Park, upper Manhattan, quite wooded, sparsely used in the '90's when I lived there) and I knew I had to get out, and so I MOVED, as quickly as I could, to get to an open space.
Had a "seemingly nice guy" suddenly turn very ugly in Central Park. It was near the Boathouse, and I had been sitting on a knoll nearby. There was some shrubbery in the area, but it seemed to be a fairly exposed, and thus safe, spot. They guy, after chatting me up, quietly says "I can rape you, right here, right now." Before he had finished the sentence I was on my feet, ready to kick him in the face and, yelled. Help! This man is attacking me!" He of course quickly evaporated.
Have had a man walk up to me when I was 19, in Wisconsin, and my sense was that he intended to grab my bag and run. We were on the damned open sidewalk! So, I clutched the bag tightly, and looked him directly in the face as we approached. He wasn't going to get my bag, but if he did, I would be able to describe him in the police report. As he drew nearer, I thought I might have misread the situation, but still held that bag firm. The guy said "hello" in a friendly way as we were almost next to each other, which in aftersight seemed as if it was intended to get me to let my guard down. In the next moment, he grabbed my boob, as he said "Have a nice day!" in a cheerful tone. That guy, I kicked his ass. I turned around and smacked him in the head with that clutch purse, calling him several foul-mouthed names(which of course I now realize he probably spanked off to the recollection of, once at home). He was actually SHOCKED at the affront, and whined "Why are you HITTING me? I didn't do anything to hurt you." and the sad - sad- thing is that he probably believed it.
I have been mugged, and at the time thought the intent was to kill me.
I had a group of priveldeged teenaged boys in fancy private school blazers surround me and attempt to grab me, and it was very obvious at the time they felt it was their RIGHT to do so.
I've had a few men threaten to kill me, outright and face to face - not something implied. I've had men threaten to rape me.
I have EVEN directly confronted a man who was KNOWN to be armed and had just fired the weapon, using only my big fat double-barreled mouth and gut feeling. (That guy lost his concealed carry permit as a result.)
I spent the first 20 years of my life in what I suppose some people refer to as that "High Alert" awareness of surroundings. They say to gauge your surroundings and raise the alert level as needed. I had to be at the highest level, for a large majority of the day, and ALL hours of darkness. For twenty years.
But even with this - I don't think a gun would be a beneficial thing for me to have. I don't, anymore, have to be on High Alert, and I have learned to be aware of my surroundings in a general way, to recognize potential hazard. I try to insure I don't put myself in vulnerable positions, and that really does seem to be fairly effective. Do I think I am beyond being attacked? Robbed, or killed for the sport of some sick man's hobby? No, I don't. It could happen, and as I have learned, it can happen in broad daylight. All the person needs is that few seconds of time to gain the advantage, when they are aware of their intent and I haven't yet become aware.
But.... that's just me. I can see why someone wants a gun as home protection. I just don't think that I could ever pull the trigger should I come upon someone in my home.

I hid my Glock in a strategic location in my house so when they came to get me I could go there and surprise them! Well, I can't figure out where that location is. So, I hid my 357 in a strategic location.........
I just need to get enough guns so that I'm bound to find one of them! That's how squirrels operate.
When I was a kid I would have dreams like somebody was breaking into the house and I would run to get a gun in my parents room. I would find the damn gun but there where no bullets and I had to look for those. I hate it when that happens.
