I first met Pat some 10 years ago and can attest to his uncompromising generosity.
Pat and I become acquainted through mutual friends and he instantaneously embraced me as his friend. As an example of his generosity, not long after meeting Pat, I told him about a ski trip I had planned to Mammoth. He insisted that I take his new Volkl's despite the substantial cost of the rigs. In one of the great jackass moments of my life, I had separated the skis at Mid-Chalet during a lunch break and managed to collect only one correct ski as well as someone else's exact replica of the same ski/binding combo that was 5 cm longer. I didn't notice the boneheaded maneuver at the time, however when I brought the skis home to Pat he immediately noticed. Undoubtedly I would have blown my lid had the table been reversed, however Pat was a true diplomat. I tried to rectify the situation with some cash, and yet I never did the right thing, to replace Pat's skis and be done with it. Still, Pat never held a grudge, though I'm sure he was seriously disappointed with how I handled the situation.
More recently, Pat and I had both bid on an epic poster of Tom Gilje and Mike Lechlinski climbing in the Needles in support of Tom and his truly unfortunate accident. Pat ended up winning the auction, and I told Pat that I was happy for him. Soon after, we were hanging out with some friends at a going-away get together as I was taking a job in Las Vegas, and in one of the most generous acts I have ever witnessed in my life (and indeed this would also be the last time I would see Pat), Pat produced the poster and gave it to me as a present. For many reasons, I consider this poster one of my most precious possessions, and while I repeatedly tried to tell Pat how much his gift meant to me, I still don't think I could have possibly conveyed to him the true meaning of his actions.
Pat, you were one of the true class acts, and I am all too humble to have been considered your friend.

Great tribute Mari!
Pat was famous for helping people on the bike.
When I was completely dying on some hill on my bike Pat would come up from behind and give me a push. I used to call it the hand from heaven!

Pat's Memorial
To all those who have posted their memories and condolences, Pat's family would like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The outpouring of love and grief and help has been wonderful and comforting. This outpouring has been in and of itself a testimony to the important role that Pat played in the lives of so many people. I am sorry for not being better about responding but it has been very hard for all of us.
We are just beginning to get organized for a proper gathering so that we can all come together to celebrate Pat's life and to mourn his passing but I want to let you all know that we have managed to set a date and have found a site that we feel will be fitting for Pat. Please try to join us on Saturday January 11th at 1:00 for a memorial for Pat followed by a celebration of things and people he loved with drink, companionship and a coming together of the many different circles of friends that made Pat who he was and so dear to us all.
We will be celebrating Pat at Farnsworth Park Amphitheater at 1:00 followed by a gathering of friends at the adjacent Davies Hall till 5 or 6:00. Farnsworth Park is near the very top of Lake Avenue in Altadena and a beautiful setting for a soul who spent as much of his life outdoors as he could manage.
More details to follow. We will be setting up some sort of Evite system - not to limit who can come as we want all of Pat's friends and family to join if they can - but to get some estimate of headcounts so we have enough Great German beer, wine and Bratwurst (among other things!).
Thank you all for being such an important part of Pat's life and help us all celebrate his memory the right way. Please also pass this information along if you know of people who would want to know and join us.
I can be reached at 213-220-3508 cell, 626-794-4765 Home or mnay@hntb.com and welcome any thoughts, photos, suggestions, musical offerings etc... that would make this day as perfect a reflection of this complex beautiful person as we can make it.

Mark, It is hard. My husband, Dan, who knew Pat through climbing, died 6 years ago. Death is hard, especially when you've had a great relationship like you probably did with your brother.
It was a struggle for me as it probably is with you and your family. Feel free to email or call me. lynnie

This is such a loss, Pat was such a great guy. I will miss seeing his smiling face at all the Joshua Tree gatherings. He was always so supportive of others and just an all around great guy. Earth will not be as nice of a place without him in it, I used to look for him riding by on his bike at random places. I Miss him already, Condolences to all that loved him RIP

Thanks for sharing M&M, you know Pat always looked at you two with the highest of regards.
Karen I will try and find the pictures of our Half Dome adventure. Considering we climbed that pre digital age, I know all my slides are in storage.
Mark thanks for posting here on Supertopo, I look forward to celebrating Pats life with you and everyone on Jan. 11th

Absolutely! My heart skipped a beat when I saw the birthday listing on FB with his name. It is still so difficult for me to get my head around this one.
I never met him personally but shared emails and grief when Walter passed.
Shine on Pat...a tremendous loss.
