I don't necessarily find it blameworthy to delete a thread, particularly a commercial one (e.g. "Gear for Sale. . ."). It clears space on the front page more quickly.
I also don't find fault in Largo's action, because he said he would delete it in the thread itself. Also, by his timing of the deletion, I got in the last word. ;-)
I personally would have preferred that Largo's thread stay up, because I read it as a celebration of creative language, but I guess too many others, perhaps conditioned by speech codes, saw it as out-of-bounds. To me, the OP should have the discretion to delete a thread that degenerates into posts of unintended anger and hurtfulness.
Now, as for those multiple offenders, on the other hand. . .

I know, I'm being judgemental about what words of mine stay and which ones evaporate, but it's my choice. They are my words.

I've deleted a couple of threads I started or perhaps they faded far and fast into oblivion (the back pages). I really can't remember.
The reason being was one of two: no one found them interesting enough to post or someone else had started a thread concerning the same topic, prior to my effort. There was no need for a duplicate; so I deleted it.
What difference does it make? I've started to write many things that I've trashed.

I don't know which is more disturbing, the loss of those trees or the unwillingness of people to accept Joe's apology as sincere or how desperate some people are to paint Joe as the victim.
The comment about east vs west trees is relevant. The guy travels all over the world climbing. The emphasis is on climbing (and probably chicks) and not on trees or ecology. I hope that changes. I hope he discusses sh#t like this with knowledgeable locals in the future, rather than unilaterally deciding to chop/chip/scrub/destroy whatever tree or chunk of "granite" (or chick) he finds desirable. Unfortunately locals in some areas are just as unaware.
