Whoah baby - funky stuff left and right! Monkeybusiness - funk Czech style, cool stuff - I played with a funk band in Bratislava - they dig the funk over there man...

T.M.Stevens - yeah!!! that cat is way funky - reminds me of a Larry Graham funk bass instructional tape I have - slap and pop - gotta love that!

RIP Billy Preston - one of the greats no doubt about it - the world will miss u.

Even if you never want to play funk bass, you'll dig this DVD! He's the master for sure!

Winter - yeah, now you're talkin'... I got the Neville Brothers last album - and it is funky - really good stuff. I didn't know about Ivan Neville's projects but somebody mentioned the other day a band called Dumstaphunk (his band I think) - cool tip, I'll definitely check 'em out. Never heard of the other stuff you mentioned either but I'm gonna put my p-hole to them as well! Big thanks bro...the funk's not dead after all!

A very fine Nigerian funk compilation, unfortunately the record label has gone bust and it's getting quite hard to source at a reasonable price. You might find tracks out there on p2p or get lucky second-hand. Try the psychedellic "Kita Kita" or more mellow "No Discrimination". If anyone can find this on vinyl for me, I'll pay them well...

If anyone doesn't have Fela Kuti's "No Agreement", just go and buy it right now!

If you like Fela, then Geraldo Pino is worth a listen:

1960s inspiration to the man, very James Brown. Try "Born to be free".

"Lagos All Routes" and "Lagos Chop Up":

http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/189338-01.htm
are two excellent compilations of Nigerian Funk/Highlife/Afrobeat from the 60s and 70s.

Away from the motherland, has anyone mentioned The Meters? At their peak in the '70s but still keeping the flame burning:

New British Funk, pretty good:

been meaning to pick this one up; not new, but possibly classic:

oh, and I'm looking for some old Harvey Mason stuff--this one's out of print, available only as an (expensive) import: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004T1D7/qid=1149793077/sr=1-17/ref=sr_1_17/104-7396186-3304721?s=music&v=glance&n=5174

duncan - good tips man - Geraldo Pino's got some cool stuff - afro-James Brown-ish!
The Meters...classic funk fo' sure.

marky - yeah I forgot about Harvey Mason! that stuff is hard to get...what's the deal?

rexroth - Darondo...never knew about him - just listened to some tracks! funky stuff. I guess there's a bunch of afro-james-browns out there. The Daktaris were kinda' influenced by the Godfather as well.

great tips! thanks...gotta get some of these fo'shizzle.

Attention Funkateers and Funkarettes! May I direct your attention to:

Daptone Records! Visit their website here: http://www.daptonerecords.com/pages/home.html

Do it! Do it now! And you will see that, although not at the forefront of popular music today, The Funk is alive and well! My personal favorite is The Budos Band - a few young cats that hail from Staten Island, often defined as an "Afro Funk Powerhouse"! Also be sure to check out The Poets of Rhythm - they're actually from Germany but DAAAAAM they can funk with the best of 'em!

Those are just a couple examples of what Daptone Records has to offer - theres lots more!

In the words of the great George Clinton himself: "THINK! It ain't illegal yet!"

Rub some funk on it!
