The fundraising link goes to the John Long Donations Fund in the name of Krista Goodsitt.

Curious, has there been any follow up on this?

Its legitimacy has been questioned here, and that's made me hesitant to use it. Things are a little murky.... Can someone say who the initiator of the donation site is...

Or this?

You might read Largo's post.

He said very clearly, "Thanks. But no thanks.

This may not be of much help, and could just be a coincidence. There is an actress named Krista Goodsitt, FWIW. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0329359/

I will not donate to that site either, but will donate if there is a get together this spring.

Everbody just chillout, Locker already is, so everybody else. . .I have no idea about the chipin link, it doesn't come from me. So, instead of a funraiser let's just call it a Party for JL this Spring at JT.

So that said, I hope that this increases the, confusion. . .

Edit, I can't change the Title of the thread, and this one is getting, good. . .

Spoke to John last night. Was alert and in reasonable spirits, but will be in the hospital a while longer for more work on his leg.

No one should send any money to the mystery website unless John himself endorses the idea. The internet is full of scams and until we get proof of authenticity, it should be treated like an email from a Nigerian prince promising that you'll make a fortune if you just wire transfer to him a small sum.

I like the idea of a party, if for no other reason than to get the crew together and celebrate the beginning of John's recovery, and that we all have survived for another year.

When Layton needed some help, I just wrote a couple of good checks straight to his name. No baloney with a middleman.

Now I have some Layton Kor autographs.

My knee surgery was a fairly complicated procedure, but it was only an arthroscopic followed by a single replacement and graft procedure. 3 days in the hospital and then I was home on a walker for a while. '

Total: 85 grand. Medicine is a racket. I have good insurance through my wife because I am self employed, so they covered almost all of it.

I noticed on the bills that half of it went away with the "provider write-off." That means that the insurance company only paid so much for each procedure and that the hospital wrote off half the costs for that sweet insurance.

I asked a doc friend about this, and if you are not insured, you won't get that provider write off and be stuck with the full 85 grand. No kidding. You fall and break your ankle now and you have to sell your house.

When the bills come due, I hope John realizes that in many ways he steers the climbing community to this day. So we all owe him for that.

I'm afraid that this will end up costing over 200 grand. For a broken ankle. No kidding. If any of us have the means to make a dent in that, just write a check here in a few months when the bills start coming in. No in kind gifts. Cash is much better.

I know he doesn't want it and didn't ask for it, but if he needs it we should consider it. Being a self employed writer is almost impossible to get decent insurance for.

Medical costs are so nuts in this country that even a guy like Largo could take a big hit over a broken ankle. It used to not be like this.

One good thing is that Largo may go through a huge spurt of writing to make some real coin. Being the best climbing writer out there will be a boon to climbers of all ages. Forever. Largo's writing will long outlive him.

On the other side of the dam I have five of his books in my library. I hope he doesn't have to deal with this money-raising mess.

ChipIn is just a widget gateway to paypal and whatever addy the set up person used at paypal.

My spidey sense says it is shady and that is why I was suspect way back on the first page. I hope it is on the up and up, but hey, being gullible is not one of my long suits.

Now if Bullwinkle or some other real dude had his name on it, then yeah, great and easy way to buff out the big man with some moolah. But so far I'm not seeing that.

Kristin Goodsitt is a "friend" of John's on his facebook page. Yes, he has 1,000s. :) Doesn't necessarily make it legit, but thought I'd toss that out there...

I'm thinking next time El Jefe Largo snaps out of his opiate induced haze, he at least says "yeah I know her and she's ok", or "WTF? ...Never heard of her".

That should clear it up.

I've been talking to Krista for hours now.

I talked to a Nigerian once for 37 hours straight and still never saw my 80# of gold bars I was supposed to be getting for my $61.00. ;)

Hope it all works out and it was a good test run for the next ChipIn event.

It's really a sad state of affairs for well-meaning individuals trying to help a friend, having to worry about some bottom fishing pond slime trying to make a shady buck! I've never met JL, but he's truly one I've admired for a long time. I also him a repayment in kindness for something he did for someone close to me. So...if there is a party...fundraiser...whateverthehellitis, count me in.

I don't mean to imply anything good or bad with the use of the term "friend" upthread. I don't know her but I also did not want folks thinking she is a total mystery person up to no good either.

edit: Made lots of typo corrections. Typing on the droid without glasses on is not a good idea. :)

Blitzo, as an example, has like 2300 "friends" online including scads of hot chicks from unpronounceable Eastern Block hell-holes. Would I send them like a $100 to pass to a real friend of mine? No. Would I send them $5 for some pics? Probably yes. Does Blitzo actually know any of them? That would be no... so yeah, the whole "friend" thing is kinda funky in general.

To add... It is a shame, sort of, but maybe not that all this suspicion is on this well meaning gal, if that is what she is. But, this whole ChipIn widget is pretty sketch in itself. It is really just a false layer of legitimacy in front of a paypal account. Much like a blog post or even a web page, you can make it all flowery and heartfelt, with ZERO checks and balances as to authenticity. It is a glorified redirect to a paypal link. Let's say you hear of something happening to someone like Largo or Whitney Houston or Liberace, or some other luminary... within 5 minutes you can set up a page asking for money to buy flowers or lap dances or whatever and people will for sure start sending you money. You can pop in some pics, say you are family, say you are a cop or a fireman, and on and on. Read about some of the scams on Google. It is pretty widespread.

If Stich says shes legitimate, my doubts are laid to rest.

But Stich, did your verification efforts really require hours on the telephone with this woman? You have gone above and beyond the call of duty, unless there might be another reason for your interest other than a thorough investigation? :)

Stich-Just kidding, sincere thanks for the effort in vetting that solicitation and thanks to Krista as well for taking such quick action.

I would be happy to take the lead on the fundraising, if John approves.

John is going to need a lot of patience getting back on his feet and his friends will need it also. I know we all want to help right now, but let's let JL get out of the hospital and then he can tell us the best ways that we can help.
