One foot, er...skate in front of the other, one step at a time...

Thanks for the love of adrenaline. ;D

And for more than I could ever put into words, but especially for this life of mine. I see you in my face, my lopsided grin, my stature, my wrists and hands...I've walked a mile or so in your shoes facing similar medical and emotional challenges...I know your heart. You live within me. I couldn't ask for more.

The muppet shares much of you, as well, which when reflected back at me fills me with the most awesome kind of wonder. She's a tinkerer, too. Grin.

We're thinking of you in memory of what would have been your 82nd birthday, and sending you all our love.

I believe in my heart strongly, that wherever you are, you have found peace...and, again, I couldn't ask for more.

Audrey- You two are beyond cute and you three beyond marvellous.

Bill's spirit is certainly pleased by having a family and community to carry him along now more than ever before.

Happy Holidays to Clan Dolt!

Hi LilaBiene,

Bill was a special person. We used to buy all his new products at The Mountain Store in Tarzana. I did keep many of his beautiful pitons but somehow over the years they have all disappeared. I do have a couple of postcards he printed of photos he took, with poems he wrote and a "not-gold" Dolt tie pin.
If you would like these I would be happty to send them to you.

LilaBiene,

I also have Bill's original Climber's Guide to the High Sierra that he bought in 1955.
Inside he lists his first climbs:
April 28, 1959 Mt. San Jacinto
May 3, 1959, Mt. San Gorgonio
May 31, 1959, Tom Frost and I - Flakes - Tahquitz
...... more listed up to Dec. 1962.

I was just popping back over to jot down a note about having just found two more of Bill's relatives, but in the US (one a direct Feuerer line) -- the magic of DNA testing -- and the incredible coincidences that seem to keep happening around birthdays -- and to say how grateful I am, once again, that so many people kept his memory alive for over 40 years so that I could "find" him here, and, for all of the friendship and support and generosity of heart and spirit...okay...I'm in tears.

Thank you just somehow doesn't even touch how appreciative I am, but THANK YOU, from my heart, to everyone who has shared a story, given me a hug, shot me an email to say hello, given me encouragement to climb, shared part of their lives teaching me and answering my seemingly endless questions, given me ever-so-precious Dolt creations and their shared memories, put me in touch with his friends and Ann's, too...and somehow connected this kid -- who grew up with the idea that she just sprouted from nowhere as a complete oddball -- to the roots of all that is wonderful about the two of them...especially their greater climbing family.

Thank you for the roaring, welcoming campfire...and please know that each of you has made a difference, collectively starting a ripple across a pond that continues outward...

Bill would print photos he took and then mount them on paper with a poem he wrote for each picture:

Hi Jim,

Your package arrived today as the muppet and me were decorating our first full-size Christmas tree -- synchronicity.

Time stopped the moment I held the book in my hands. I couldn't fathom something I believed was an impossibility, as his personal effects, as I understand it, just disappeared. That you found the book, picked it up, stored it for all these years and then sent it along to me...to be on the receiving end of such kindness and generosity just made my heart explode.

I don't imagine I will ever be able to convey with words what it felt like to be suspended in time, connected to the physical book, yet with an inangible view into Bill's world...I couldn't fight off the tears of joy and sadness and appreciation.

I'm due for shoulder surgery in a couple of weeks, and will save the book for when I'm in forced captivity, with adequate time to completely immerse myself in the history.

I will be forever grateful. Thank you from my heart.

Where affection and respect remain, little is lost...

Jim Thomsen- You have a heart of GOLD, Solid Gold.

What a sweet and generous thing to do!

It is as if we are moving backwards watching Bill materialize from the sands of time long out of the hourglass.

A Very Merry Christmas to you Good Shepard!

Thanks for pulling out the Red and White for everyone to appreciate!

Saw this while at my accountant's office last spring. Asked her where she got it-she said she got it at the Alpine Hut (Ski Hut?) in the Bay Area in the late 60's.

Yeah, Mastodondon, that was The Ski Hut, on Shattuck. Al Steck, manager. George Rudolph owner, and many of the Golden Age climbers as employees there. Amazing phenomenon. I can still smell the place in memory. Leather and all that arcanery from Europe. Where I was a kid buying my first person (Edelrid) and Pivetta Cortinas then Spiders.

Approximately across the street and upstairs was Western Scientific Apparatus, a technical glass blowing shop that sold to the Rad Lab and early Silicon factors. And to patchouli-drenched Owsley, his chemicals. I worked there in 1966.

Back to Ski Hut. Trailwise was another of its labels.

Great link to George Marks' 80th and a ton of info on early mountaineering equipment manufacturing in the Bay Area:

http://www.tombutt.com/forum/2011/110804b.html

George Rudolph was a good friend of George Marks, founder of Sierra Designs, with his partner/Partner, Bob Swanson. Both Georges nearing the end here:

Al Steck told me around 2000 that he held Rudolph in the highest esteem, that he had been a terrific boss and co-worker.

Mr Haan Sir,

It's funny that you talk about the smell of a store like that. I can still remember the very distinctive smell of the original REI in Seattle where I grew up. Got my REI membership in the late 60's (my father's REI number from the early 60's was 21,897). Bought my first blue RR shoes, Chouinard pitons, Chouinard hammer, Eiger biners, etc, etc. A few old-school climbers like Al Givler, Reilly Moss and Jay Ossiander worked there in the climbing section. They used to swing young, low-life dirtbags like myself deals on stuff.

I don't know what was originally in the building but it smelled like some kind of exotic spice. It was probably some toxic solvent or something used to tan animal hides. I remember it perfectly. I bet Reilly would know.

That's all gone now. REI is in a spanking new mega building near the I-5 freeway.

Such wonderful memories -- so happy to learn about the small things, for these are what make up this life.

Such joy it brings me that things my dad made with his own hands are treasured still...Thank you for sharing with me, and for the connectedness, which I value over all else, for without it I never would have found my place in this world. <3
