The fact that this thread exists is proof of the efficasy of billionaires flooding the airwaves with 100s of millions of untraceable dollars to foster an atmosphere of fear and hate.

The fact that you would say that, philo, is more evidence that submission to demagoguery and willingness to polarize rather than compromise is a great sociall ill.

The future is brighter than it has been in at least a decade. We are just beginning to recover from the sugar high... read today that consumer debt service (as a percentage of income) is at its lowest point since 1994.

JStan (on the first page) said it all pretty well (and factually).

He must have a hotline to commodity traders.

That's the thing. For the most part, oil prices are driven by speculators

No kidding. I'm still chuckling to myself every few hours over the gas prices are high as heck and it's all Obama's fault thing.

Yep. The president can only be blamed for the stuff he can actually control. He doesn't make legislation, congress does that. Even W. can only be blamed so much for the state of things although the undeclared wars sure did take a toll on our pocket books.

We can, on the other hand, condemn presidents for their philosophy and how they push it onto the country through appointments, executive orders, starting of wars, and things of that sort. I think that the jury is still out on Obama in that regard. He could have pushed harder at socialist stuff but then he would be leaving office very soon had he done that. The congress can be blames and should be much more than they are now. I guess it's just easier to blame one person than it is to blame a large diverse collection of people.

The spike in gas prices is actually a Kali-generated problem. Rox is undoubtedly celebrating.

Well, I haven't lived in CA in more than 20 years, so take this with a grain of salt, but what are the alternatives?
Seems like you are screwed in large part because of two things:
1. Prop 13 - revenue from property taxes does not reflect valuations and has hurt school funding. This could be fixed with enough votes.
2. Public sector pensions - Huge contracted guarantees for state employees such as prison guards. Not sure there is much to be done about this short of the state declaring bankruptcy. You either have to tax enough to cover these, or cut other things to cover them.

"The spike in gas prices is actually a Kali-generated problem. "

Funny that that fact hasn't much entered into any of the gas price rantings heard lately.

SteveP...Prop 13 has some issues...This lady friend with a small 3 bedroom , 2 story house , pays the same property tax as me...I own a small 1 bedroom condo...Our state needs a more progressive and fair tax system but i suspect the tea-bag mania thing is going to keep the little guys like me , covering the lost revenue for others that live in larger homes...

I think that the world has always been 'coming to an end' for those alive at the time, and I don't think we're much different now. That being said, things are different this day in age, mostly because of technology, imo.
Something I've been looking into a little bit- Agenda 21. Very interesting stuff, certainly 'conspiracy theory' type stuff, but I really don't like it.
Video a friend sent me about it, it's kinda long and I'm only halfway through it... thoughts?

Millenarianism and conspiracy theories have long had a place in U.S. culture. So what else is new?

Anyway, the anti-Christs (little George and big Dick) came and went, and we're still OK.

Oh, I'd say there's at least a few thousand families of US war casualties (not to mention whoknowshowmanyother Iraq/Afghanistan families) who'd vehemently disagree with that.

What blows my mind is that Repugs can somehow convince themselves that what has happened over the last 4 years comes anywhere close to the amount of human and economic damage that occurred on their Party's watch & 'leadership'.

well dirtbag, I hope you're right! problem with all the 'conspiracies' is that eventually people aren't open to believing any of them because there's been so much crap put out there in the first place. plus it's just goddammed tiring with all these scenarios of how things are going to sh#t....

As far as 'conspiracies' go, however, I'm sure we could be in agreement that a corporation like Monsanto is so deep in bed with the FDA and the governmental system that they'll get their way with GMO crops and food, etc. Just look at the GMO food labeling proposition in CA and the debate on labeling food. I guess my point is that at one point the evil of Monsanto may have been just a 'conspiracy theory' but it sure seems to be beyond theory at this point, at least in my opinion.
