Oh, I forgot... Isn't Hood River, Oregon, like the best place in the West or something. I've only wizzed past on the freeway but my southward glances told me maybe yes. Check with Hudon to see if he could use an extra barista.

How are you with cold? Ely NV. is cool, but it can be butt cold in the winter. Still cheapish. Great Basin NP, Cave Lake SP, endless adventure climbing as well as plenty of other outdoorsy things to do. Mostly ranchers and government (BLM, NPS, USGS & FS) types there.
Resort towns or university towns blow, too expensive.
I'm thinking of Reno/Carson myself in the next year or so. But mostly cause my Mom is retiring to that area next year and could use some help.

South of France (Provençe, where Jennie and I have lived before). Sausalito. Maybe Corsica, New Zealand is in the running. The Pacific Northwest (loads of relatives up there), US Virgin Islands, or just stay in Ireland. Jen often asks me: "If we win the lottery where would you like to live?"
I say: "Let's win it first."
Or an alterative question: "If we win the lottery, where would you like to vacation?"
"A lonnggg trip around the world", I answer.
Good luck and best wishes in finding the best place for you Michelle.

I think.I'm already Nevada prejudiced! Cold is ok. Humid, depressing rainfests, no way. I lived in Arcata, I'm good!
Shack, I think I knew that somehow! Years ago I visited in Verdi and liked it. I don't have any machine guns though.. lol I think rent first is the way to go. I like rural with space but at first it won't matter. Ive been perusing listings in lee Vining and Bridgeport and as low as it is there, I could get an obscence castle in NV for less. Silver or even Walker lake is interesting since I'm returning back to.more water sports, openwater swimming. Plus the Carson ,walker and Truckee rivers are enticing.
I guess the more I think about it a decent VA close is handy. I'm stuck here for now bc my hip will need another surgery and healthcare in Palo Alto is good and free.
Thanks for all the responses in my research phase!

For the best dating scene for a single woman and mixing it with some climbing, it would be;
San Diego
Denver
Maybe even Phoenix
(I looked a the top ten dating cities of the U.S.)

If working/income generation is not a constraint, then it opens up all kinds of small towns and cool home bases far from crowds.
Reno seems like a compromise for those who have to work still.
I would go for somewhere near Bishop to satisfy the diversity of possible climbing joneses, and then maybe spend some time chillin' in Hawaii when I start to miss snorkeling.
Edit: What is a top "dating city"? Does that mean a place that has a huge diversity of people, at least one of which is likely to be a good match for you? Or does it mean there's a good chance that whomever you meet is willing to have sex with you?

If she is into guns, she doesn't want to be in California.
No good stuff available there anymore.
Nevada is still part of the land of the free.
Just sayin'.

Really depends on what you want to spend your time doing.
X2
IMO it's hard to beat CA because of the mediterranean (rain in winter, sun in summer) climate, plus the mountains and ocean. But yes it's expensive and has so many people. Maybe Joshua Tree? I'm sure there's out of the way places in CA that are cheap.
I didn't like the atmosphere of Reno when I was there, kind of sleazy from being a gambling town. And it's too dry to live in. Of course IMO.
Tahoe of course it great, but very expensive, and you have to love snow.
Ogden UT looks like an affordable, outdoorsy place, but it's UT...

Well Bomz, I knew that, especially around here! Im flattered.people have begun the slander on my thread. I like asking sh#t like this here, it also gives me an idea of who may be around said areas. Reno has one up, I know some peeps there already.
Be nice to your elders!
I like guns, don't have any tho (altho I want a tactical shotgun ). I'll check out that site shack. Ive been perusing craigslist.
I'm super lucky, I don't have to work but its a va income so I'm not wealthy, hence wanting to bail for now on CA, which don't get me wrong, I love. I need a VA close, I like the high desert and I don't have a man.bitch to help out on my fantasy cabin on 10000 acres, so being relatively close to town would be nice for now. I've done south cal, no thanks!
Problem, I take med marijuana for pain and PTSD anxiety and that's the real bonus in CA. I'm sure I could fly way under the radar as jail is not appealing but that's stressfull, defeating the purpose.
Fyi, my truck is called The Melinium Falcon! Ot info..

utah is ok for the gun enthusiast, and if you make the effort to live up the canyons like i do you can live next door to ski resorts while still being 25 minutes away from an international airport and state of the art medical facilities...there is amazing rock of all sorts, different in every direction, all within 2-4 hours...towers ? check. cobblestone ? we got that..feel like having drinks and shooting explosive targets ? yeah, we got that too..but not in the canyon next to the ski resorts, go figure...
The DOWNSIDE - You ARE in Utah. You have to experience the magic to really understand what its like to be stared down by moms (plural !) and the 15 kids at the store, or have your neighbors just come over and mow your lawn/fix the sprinklers while you are out climbing, so 'it looks nicer'...Salt Lake has bad air too - I won't move back down the hill voluntarily...
(if that's the double dampening stock on a shortie 870 with the extended mag i've got the same crowd pleaser right here next to me...2 shot, two 4, 2 OO, then a couple slugs iirc...)
edit - Medical ? Colorado. No Question. GTFO and go. I'm debating the process of moving back there myself, maybe one more winter here...
