No pain no gain. A remarkable day for Don. He has regained his twisted humor and was lucid, remembering parts of his evacuation etc. A great joy for Jane and visiting family.

It is an art form balancing a situation like this and there are times when he needs to slip back into deep sleep to recover from these efforts.

Progress!

However, he is a long way from stalling forth an ordering himself a festive dinner at Jaliscoes!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospital_medicine

After detailed conversation with Tom and Carol, it is my understanding that this is now what Dr. Tom Herbert is and does: of course I may have misinterpreted and he may well be nothing more than a GP/family practice doctor who has unofficially been doing this for our friend (which is certainly the case until Don gets moved). If/when Don gets moved, the hope is that it will be to the hospital where Dr. Herbert works so that he can take over as Don's primary physician and therefore call the shots, as would a hospitalist or as one specifically and formally. It's quite possible I have that specific title wrong per Dr. Herbert's formal title/function.

Please keep in mind I am under heavy medication/fatigue following discharge from hip surgery and Tom, Carol and I have had these conversations following their own fatigue, having been down at the hospital with Don. I apologize for any confusion or misinformation.

Herbert is as you state Roy. He was in charge of my case a year ago in Reno. He doctors, oversees and coordinates. He excels in medicine as he does in climbing. Don will be in excellent care.
Glad to hear Don is making progress.

Hey Roy, all the best to you in your recovery! You are right, Dr. Herbert is currently working as a hospitalist. I had never heard that term before, but a few days ago I was climbing with Mark, a nurse who often works on Tommys' patients. Mark said he is really good at this job...

Sending healing energy Don's way! Great to hear the news of breathing on his own.

Much love to Jane...and thanks to T. Carter for updates...

Report from visiting friends:

Today Don conversed, "held court", told stories.

I suspect he pulled out and delivered his favorite Monty Python quote, "I'm not dead yet"!

He remembers details of his rescue and is eternally grateful to all who assisted him last week.

He is working very hard, it is exhausting and painful to work his lungs with all those fractures.

There is progress each day.

My best wishes for an amazing recovery. I was just looking back through some of Don's postings, and this one cracked me up, I being someone who moved from California -> Alaska -> Seatte

but be sure to catch Don's upstream posting in that thread, too.

As I was lurking, I just saw about your mishap Don. The Horror!

Joking & sign language use are great signs of recovery!!

The updates from Modesto are much appreciated.

Best wishes from Montucky to Jane & yourself for getting to a Reno hospital ASAP!

Here is a memory exercise: We met again @ Margarite's & Rich's during a Green Lake get together two or so years ago.

Good to hear you are on your way back.....

Thanks to everyone for all of the updates and its great to hear that Don's on the upswing. All of his friends from the northwest have been quite concerned and ST has been an excellent way to stay informed. Don and Jane are both very special friends and from all of the posts I've read I can see that I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Dave Davis,

Does this mean people like Pat Timson, Anne Tarver, and Julie Bruegger (sp) know?
'Cuz it's going to take a stout usual-suspects/shite-talking brigade comprising folks like this to buttress Don's formidable humor as he comes around and exits the ICU ...
(whether they pitch in by cards or calls or whatever)

[edit] Yes, Anders, Animule upthread ... you prolly just outed her good ... what sharp little eyes you've got!

Hi Greg!

And yes, let's hope that Mastadon is back to his regular stomping grounds soon.
