So we were on a hike today, that ended by going through the Kraft Boulders.
The ground around all the boulders - several feet away from the boulders in most cases - had not a single thing growing. Trails all over the place due to the amount of people out there, of which there was at least 30 by early morning.
One of the boulders in particular was coated pure white in a strip about 4 foot wide and 10 feet long, across an entire lip. No way this is going to get washed off by one of our rare rain storms. Or several of them for that matter.
Would any of the bouldering types here care to explain to me why that's necessary? Most of the time I see these guys and gals, they have a chalk pot or three and their arms are coated halfway to their elbows.
The boulders were all covered in chalk to some degree, and ones like the one I described are really pissing off the local homeowners, which right now I agree with. I'd sure like to know what the justification is for that, because I sure don't get it.

Bouldering is very necessary in climbing. I am just starting to take it seriously and hopefully it will be more enjoyable when I get better at it. Eldo is a hard place to go bouldering but it is kind of a mini bouldering destination. But it is what it is and bouldering is just practice for the real thing.
What I don't get is bouldering videos that all those d-bags publish. We get it, you climbed a tiny rock, big deal. It's practice climbing. Highball is a different story but for every 10 ft boulder with a v5 on it there are like 20 youtube movies. IMO these movies are as boring as old dudes telling you how hard they climbed BITD :)

I think that when you're climbing at you're limit having even slightly slick hands will make you pop off. So, that's the reason ppl use chalk.
Do they use too much? Probably. Tick marks are the worst. But they do help you climb in some situations.
Do local homeowners have the right to be pissed? Well, anyone has the right to be pissed about anything. So yes. But in the grand scheme of things, if this is their greatest worry in life I think they've got things sorted.

Clearly you have not been there during the summer Tstorms.

Because.
The boulders were all covered in chalk to some degree, and ones like the one I described are really pissing off the local homeowners
Really? Where did you hear they were upset?
I'd sure like to know what the justification is for that, because I sure don't get it.
Really? That close to Vegas, a 200 square mile ecological and scenic DEESASTER and the least sustainable civilization in the country, and you are worried about human impacts at a 0.06 square mile boulder field? Seriously?
(Watching Ondra climb is mind blowing)

The fastest growing aspect of climbing is bouldering, because it is boring.
Kids these days, they love to be bored.
