Wonderful photos in this thread.
Here is very good read for anyone interested in the history of our central valley and it's transformation.

Where the plains meet the foothills.
The Merced River lies just beyond the first ridge of golden hills, as seen from Hornitos Rd.
McSwain Dam is out of the picture to the left, hidden by a hill.
The largest vernal pool visible from the Snelling Road between the river and Merced. Looking east and south.

I must second Pud's estimate of Gerald Haslam.
His work is day rigger for Okie oil-patcher stories.

Mouse is down there somewhere. Taken from Mt. Bullion Ridge Road - what a bumper crop of succulent poison oak - everywhere.

Yes ... the central Valley is actually a very beautiful place.
Most people never see the real central valley because they roar thru it in their tin cans on wheels with the windows rolled up and air conditioners on.
These aliens just blast thru wearing their filtered glasses oblivious to the variegated life around them.
One must go deep into the fields themselves and face to face inches from the ground to appreciate.
Only when they do a roll-over and faceplant do they suddenly "see"?
just see .....

Si, hombre!
Awesome shots this morning, DMT; and Andy, thanks for taking us along.
You two dudes really get around, huh?
I wish that I had been able to keep that well-pump and drilling job in Oxnard.
We were in a different location practically every day.
The full moon sets in clouds over the Central Valley.
Gene, I know you expense the gasoline we use, so let me buy lunch on the next trip out, OK?
Oakhurts was a fun trip.

That giant park in Snelling which you mentioned on the prior page is called Henderson Park; and it has a parking LOT that is nearly as big as it is, DMT.
When I first married Liz in the in-laws all gathered at the river there for an annual Fathers' Day event put on by the BPOE, complete with softball throwing contest, 3-leg races and the like.
There is an annual car show out there, also.

DMT's tower is, if memory serves, the UOP tower in Stockton. There is an organ inside that auditorium that is DA KINE! Methodist madness.
The wine industry is one of the central valley's biggest. And the biggest of the wineries has got to be Gallo.
Both DMT and myself have presented shots of their winery on the Merced River in or near Livingston. Here is some vintage visual "surf foam" I have come across this afternoon.
Flotsam or jetsam, don't make no diff
He's drunk so much he's layin' there stiff
Spill the wine, dig that girl...[Click to View YouTube Video]
And shillin'.
California's young grape industry fell on hard times in the twenties.
Did you know that grapes in the valley and elsewhere were grown level with the ground until someone realized that trellises worked far better and saved harvesters from so much stooping?
And this enabled more folks to find work by selling lumber to string wire, by selling wire from which to hang the vines, and so forth.
Agribusiness. Agronomy. Agrarian.

Look away, you can't have a drop of it.
I've jumped that fence many times and swam in the water.
But you have to have short rope attached to the fence because the current is really strong.
After my swimming in this water the crops started growing really nicely .....

The Tower at UOP is Burns Tower. His grandson used to play drums in a bunch of local Stockton punk bands. My wife used to have to drive him to gigs in the 1980's because he was too young.

Good a place as any.
POTUS is coming to the land of golden wheat and high-quality rice.
Will he be flying into Fresno, where there are more people, or will he back-door in from Castle Airport, home to a federal prison?
He'll have to use someone's chopper. Who will be in the crew?
And will Werner be there to greet them/view them?
Just idle questions on a balmy summer night with the window open to the breeze.
I picked up a bag of delicious small local plums today at the Hmong market which is going out of business around the corner.

I love this Lee, who is retiring along with his beautiful wife next month, and his family.
They have always, in the fifteen years I have known them, been polite, helpful, double-bagged without being asked (I always buy my milk there), and have had about as good a life as a refugee could have.
I walked over to buy milk today, but had forgotten my wallet with a couple dollars in it, and my debit card, but had beaucoup quarters in my pocket. "I robbed the changed jar, but left the cash behind."
Kialee Mkt.I had not been in the market for over a week.
I was not prepared for the reality. The highlight of this jaunt was speaking with the little gang of nephews roaming around the back of the store, which was once stacked with very family-sized rice bags and a good selection of Asian coffee and pep-me-ups and slim-me-downs to counter all that extra wafer weight.
Gobi-like. But lots cooler. One, two, three!
The Kialee began business thirty years ago. Sad to see the best things in life end.
Sure would like to go to the rodeo on Sunday. We'll see.
