The Dead were the 'Wariocks,' in history.

I remember coming back to reality in the St. Mary's infirmary from a flu...and listening to the Grateful Dead, on AM radio, who had copped number one on the charts. I'd helped provide a light show and I'd known them as the Warlocks. It's nothing.

They may be Dead, but they are still Warlocks to me.

The Warbler--I am catching up on this thread, been off my rocker a while. I am listening to the QMS--Mona. The boys in that band, two, Elmore and Duncan, were in the local Merced group, The Brogues. There is a site called mercedmusic.

I think there's something here in the water or the ahcid, which effects one with the desire to listen to crap like BeeFart & Zeperella.

There's a Toutube of Zeperella doing her thing, did not care for the lameness of her tribute. Her heart's pure, I'm sure.

It's haard imagining her doing Bad Sign!

Oh Kevin you're gonna love this. The Dinosaures were touring in '83. Played a massive venue in Portland, then a massive venue in Seattle four days later. OK, three days to kill. They wound up knocking out a just-for-fun gig at the 4th Ave Tav in Olympia. Little hole-in-the-wall bar that maxed out out 250 people. F*#king tiny little bar.

So the place is so small, there are no stage risers. I maen, there was no stage, just a corner where the folks tucked into. You're eye-to-eye with the band. Just like that.

So I'm high as a kite on...whatever, and I'm literally 4' from John Cipplolina, and his eyes are like these inky black slits from so much junk and he's having the time of his life. I mean, you could see it was just pure fun for him. He was not even plugged into the soundboard...just a couple of marshalls. Still trying to figure out how that one got pulled off. He was totally Guerilla. Barry Melton was prowling the stage, such as it was, screaming "storm coming! get off the towers! Robert Hunter was like a stage prop, stumming an acoustic and smoking fugs with a big cigarette holder, a wannabe-hunter s. thompson flip-flop genius. Goddamn what a night.

I still have the flyer. We (the town of Olympia) got about a days notice. Dayum Definately in my top ten shows list.

Guys, gals, whoever. In 1968 I thumbed to Seattle to visit the Hoad. When on the road to the Hoad, I was dropped in Olympia, found the way out was really hard, but did it.

The gent from there who picked me up is long gone, surely, but he was cool enough he dropped me at Hoad's door, saying Seattle was huge. His heart was sure huge. What is it about Olympia, I wonder?

Maybe I had some terrific White boy luck. It took me 18 hrs. Merced to Seattle. Yreka to Oly helped big time.

Since it's all about Cream and Zepp and white boy blues, I can't resist the distaff side. She's just too good to not play this. Enjoy.

The campus at Berkeley is full of classic buildering, but the long-time favorite OW at the old Cal stadium' south end was the bomb.

@bvb - I sure hope you're gonna post up some photos (video?) to go along with that trip report. Whooeee!

yeah Dr. Mouse, but who was a friend to the poor?

Tracking back, talking back, apologies to the Talking Heads, but:

"say nothing once, why say it again"

THE BAND (take all the talent vectors in the various bands mentioned, add them together, multiply by one) The answer is THE BAND

And WTF - THE WHO doesn't even get a mention?

Stop sending American jobs to Argentina and Nepal, wear Da Brim proudly and support Da USA.

Tales of Purple Acid

to Tales of Brave Ulysses

! was reading through the lyrics
when ! came across the passage
of tiny purple fishes
running ha-ha through your fingers

Then Eric Clapton came to me
and in my ear he whispered
my naked fingers torture fish
of any size or color

I catch them and I caress them
though I hurt them in the process
'neath the bridge of sighs
the strings of my guitar gently

ramble on!

There's a great documentry called Beware of Mr. Baker, a must watch for Cream fans. Listen to what is said in the video about Zepplin vs Cream. NO ONE comes close to Ginger Baker with regards to percussions and innovatons with rhythm. The movie focus's on Gingers time studying percussion in Africa. They are both great bands, but the combination of Baker, Clapton and Bruce was magical the short time it lasted.

Trying to compare bands like Cream and Led Zep is like asking what is the best ice cream flavor. It's personal man... No one can be "right."

That said, think of it this way: What band would you choose to see in concert in their heyday, Cream or LZ?

Back in high school I had a buddy whose dad got him FRC (front row, center) seats at the Garden in NY for LZ. Boy, was I envious! I asked him how it went, he basically said it was too loud, too much. Ha!

For me, If I got to see one old show, it would have been The Who, Live at Leeds, no questions.

Have there been any bands since Cream and Zeppelin, and a dozen or so more from that era for that matter, that come even close in musical skill, variety of compositions, and general soul laden badassedness?

I was lucky enough to see Tool a couple of years ago. They completely blew my mind. If you get any chance to catch that band, pay whatever it takes, one of the best shows in my life, and I've seen a bunch of good ones (just not the Who at Leeds ;-).

As for CvLZ... Well, Clapton is god, but Page putting a bow to his Les Paul, the devil man, the devil.

On, BTW, it's Cheery Garcia,
