this was a darn good thread.
roger, those dastardly tri cams rattle out of things.

you can really use them in just a few horizontal places.
RCA on Daff Dome is an example.
never been to the gunks (head very low now).
i know i'm biting a troll here, but i don't care.
i needed to get that off my chest.

back to topic.
i think we need to get out,
come back and post up some super neato stuff.

tar-baby, you are soooo wrong about tri-cams.

But maybe if all you got is slick granite or crumbly sandstone, they are not so good.

70' ( 90) foot wall is great they don't have to be Top Ropes. Almost everything there is pretty solid for it's grade (on lead). If you can lead Fallout and rip off you can probably climb .9's most places, and there are some redickoulously stiff .11a's on the left side that hurt. Every inch of the rock on the right side has been mauled since the 70's or earlier. Nice place if you can go there between crowds.

had a pretty cool early spring experience on the 90 foot wall.
rip off or some such juggy thing.

snow was forming in these really cool patterns that sneakily emerged all over the rock as it darkened with the weather.

Can be a bit to fiddle out at times, too. I usually only use them when other things do not work. There are some placements that are bomber and others that are bomber, if they stay where you put them. ;-)

With the re-emergence of various avatars, the threat of others leaving, the absence of others and the usual background droning... the ST Forum has about 15/35, or about 1/3 of the threads focussed on individuals... mostly of the troll variety... attention whores.

325 responses in these threads... out of 938 total... or about 1/3...

I guess I should be happy that there are 2/3rds good stuff (climbing related) to look through.

Why is the 1/3 "non-climbing--personal drama" stuff on ST Forum?

I don’t know about separate forum categories, I kind of like it as one forum. Perhaps Chris’ idea of non-climbing or personal threads being a different color, though I think if people just headed/labelled their threads appropriately, then others would have a good idea what the thread content is, and whether they want to open it or not.

Personally, I try not to flame, though I have on occasion but very little, and I think if you go back through my posts you’ll see this. (Good gawd, 1,141 posts in under a year, jeez, I have to get a life.)

Question: Is it flaming if one wonders (and posts) if a poster like Ramjit has gotten the clue yet ? (That he is a jerk, which I have called him. Is that flaming as well?) Or ask Jody why he wanted to ‘snooker’ (his words) us with the Akclimber avatar/handle? (He’s never answered that question.)

This forum has already led to me being in contact with several climbing buddies I haven’t seen for 20 plus years, or more. Plus it has brought me up to date with what’s going on, new gear, new ideas, new climbing areas, new techniques etc… And I do like the political posts and others.

It is a campfire, and I realise that it is Supertopo that is providing the firewood for free. Thanks Chris.

EDIT

re: Camp Tri-Cams. No. 3 Tri-cams are perfect pro for the 'blasting holes' in Dalkey quarry in south county Dublin here. These are of course bore holes for dynamite and such. Dun Laoghaire Harbour was built using granite from this quarry back in the day. No. 3s work great in these bore halls. I have one on my rack and will be getting at least one more just for Dalkey.

If any of you come to Dublin, pay a visit to Dalkey Hill and Dalkey quarry. Great views from the hill across both Dublin and Dublin Bay to the north and Killiney Bay (and Wicklow Mountains) to the south, which is said to be on par beauty wise with the Bay of Naples. Also great views across the Irish Sea. With binoculars you can see Wales (on a clear day of course).

E-mail me and I’ll show you around, especially Dalkey village, Dalkey Hill and the quarry. The Dalkey DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) station is about a ten-minute walk to the quarry. Dalkey itself is about a 20-minute train journey from Dublin city centre, so getting there is easy.

If the weather is good, we’ll go climbing in the quarry, some very good routes. None more than 120 or so feet max, but sound granite of good quality and nice atmosphere (trees, birds, breeze and maybe even sunshine). Cracks, face, 5.0-5.13s. And extremely very little rubbish or broken bottles (I repeat, hardly any at all). Amazing for an area so close to a major conurbation. (Just check out the rock on Grizzly Peak in Berkeley. It’s full of broken bottles, or at least use to be years ago.)

MORE EDIT

Tahoe Climber, I have to disagree about the distinction ‘thing’.

The forum says: SuperTopo Climber’s Forum
Not: SuperTopo Climbing Forum

And I think that it would be a shame if it were to be changed to just a climbing forum. We are climbers and as far as I am concerned, there is more to life than just climbing.

Though I agree that there are a number of non-climbing threads, some of which I have started. Wait until I get back in proper climbing shape (back to leading 5.10 plus) and can make it up to Scotland (and Norway?) for the ice climbing, then I'll start posting climbing TRs and pix.

I also agree that some of these threads are getting way too personal. Calling somebody a jerk once and then agreeing to disagree is one thing, but some posters are taking things to far, IMO.

My two cents.

the whole thing could be grist for a sociology/cultural anthropoly mill.

the distribution of behavior seen here mirrors what goes on at the crags, at work, in life.
(lot of bickering, posturing, as well as productivity in the workplace, right?)

this is who we are; we may or may not be evolving.
our condition is evidenced right here, right now on the forum.
a "town meeting" every now and then is healthy.
other than that, we get out of it what we put into it.

no need to try to police it.
let 'er rip.
resistance is futile.

all i want is an ignore button.

if i could filter out about 5 users, i think i could come back on monday mornings w/ out having to wade through 2 days worth of fighting over who's the most worthless troll on the taco.

actually, if i filtered out all threads started by those 5(ish), i think there would be a page and a half or so of interesting climbing content every day.

You can't talk about tri-cams that way buster!!!!

Lessen you want one upside the head.

The tri-cam is the non-existent god's way of saying, yes, you can do very strange things with bizarre bits of metal and live.
