Wow Rox,
thats a rant for the annals,..

Ive read an analysis that said the mechanism of the mini doesn't scale well to a full on assault weapon. Both the barrel and the mechanism interact in such a way as to just not liking the being accurate once used with much heavier rounds, or going full auto. Its been tried over n over, and its taking a good gun and making it a bad one.
Its not for war, its for survival or dinner. Or Varmits.
But a fine light weight varmint gun with delusions of deer. And what do you need more of nowadays? An SKS is likely better n a AK-47 all be told, but how much dinner they leave on the bone after they are done shooting them?
One bullet one kill presupposes a number of targets present. But really, its valid over spray and pray, or hunters woulda always been doing much better since machine guns came out, which they ain't. The great story about the swiss marksmen being asked about facing troops being multiples of theirs, the response being to "each shoot twice"?
They say single shot muzzleloaders wiped out the buffalo that covered the plains.
Whats the rush?
I don't care its not a war tool, I ain't going to war. If I DO suddenly find some impossible desperate need to go to some war and need a better war weapon, I expect I shall kill someone with an appropriate weapon, and use his. I ain't unarmed, I just ain't got war toys.
Didn't the Allies drop cheap, tiny stamped tin single shot pistols with ten rounds each in packages over occupied lines? They had little pictures on them of how to turn them into much more powerful weapons. Go shoot a German Soldier in the back of the head, and take his....
It was reportedly a successful strategy in some hands.
Varmit rifles. It ain,t an assault rifle, its a varmit gun, and I got packs of wolves in Idaho, screw you all, I got reasonable cause now, we all do. Or soon will.
Reintroduce that sabre tooth cat Ron was yammering about, in cali. If I got to lose 70% of the deer and elk herds n Idaho over a ten year period, we might as well have something that can indescriminatedely eat Federal Wildlife Officers as soon as moose... Too many calis is a distinct possibility and we could use something that could eat them, too. Other than each other... They do need a LOT of wolves.
I think Central Park needs onea them cat populations to balance out the over-population issues there with the local human animals, too. The locals campaign to eliminate crinimals seems to be working better than expected, and that has impacted the Urban Survival Rates of Homies, considerable.
Maybe some federally protected wolves. Trained like monkeys with guns to attack gangbangers in inner city ghettos, filching the wires out of the street like animals... Kali got 25% unemployment in minority communities.
How many times you got to shoot someone before they stop stealing a TV? The barrel just doesn't get that hot shooting rabbits. Muzzle brake might be nice... but even if its zombies, we just ain't got as many candidates as Kali. I seriously doubt I would ever get to see more than one or two. You guys population just makes all the scenerios so different. "Swab my barrel, Catherine, before I start cooking off my rounds..."
I think they aught to issue mini-14s to grandmothers after passing a serious percision shooting course. You'd treat granny a little nicer then, by God.
I personally fear no man if I can make it to my car. I got a Hillbilly Brand Trunk Monkey and no better trunk monkey is made. Give them Hell, Trunk Monkey.
What was that word?
Yammering?
lol
adates,
don't get me going about the idiots at the range.
It is 2 miles from my house but I built my own facility 100 miles away just to avoid being muzzle swept.
And it didn't work.
I made a slight error.
I brought my own idiot!

"rlf,
you got a Barrett?
Bet the campers love hearing that thing. lol"
It's not mine. A friend of a friend has access to one and brought it up once. I must say, it is impressive. What ever you shoot with that thing, it's there one second, and gone the next.

Got my son some 22 shells for Christmas so that he can use his grandfather's gun. I grew up hunting some but have not had a gun in my adult life. The 22 apperently does not eject the shell casings. Is that an easy fix? Will cleaning it and oiling it do the trick? He was so excited as he spends a lot of his time watching hunting shows. So you can imagine that he about went ballistic when my dad said we could have our old 20 gauge single shot. He is chomping at the bit to use it. If anyone has advice on the 22 it would be much appreciated as I have never had a rifle.

I was in Squamish yesterday with an awesome friend with a concealed permit. Nicest guy ever. Has never been in a fight in his life, I wish every guy like him carried, and I wish every mugger knew it. There would be far fewer crimes.
If MH blames guns for killing people, I blame pencils for spelling mistakes.
My favorite for the $ is a Henry US Survival. Folds up inside itself, my wife got the accurate one (relatively), and shooting a dueling tree is a blast!
BTW: Canada should be getting rid of the long gun registry next month. Seems like we are working in the opposite direction that your government is headed. But still a long way till we meet!

Jebus,
concealed is actually a better deterrent.
The mugger has to guess.
Mike,
what kind of .22?
Maker? Action type? Model #?
Might be just the extractor needs a clean and lube.
Or it could be worn and require replacement.
Guns are machines so they require maintenance and occasional part replacement.

Ron, I don't have it with me. I will look when I pick it up next week. It is a bolt action but I don't know any more than that at this point.

I have a .22 revolver I haven't cleaned in 20 years.
Probably time. The cases are hard to extract.
Mike, it might be as minor as cleaning the chamber.

Mike if you have never owned a Rifle I am just guessing here so please do not take offense. You may want to get some instruction on gun safty if that is at all possible before teaching the kid.
If all else fails you can learn it on the internet ;)
#1 NEVER EVER POINT THE GUN AT ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD NOT WANT A BULLET HOLE IN.
#1 THE GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED EVEN IF YOU KNOW ITS EMPTY. THREAT IT LIKE IT IS LOADED.
#2 ALWAYS check the chamber to make sure it is empty even if you know it is empty. the first thing you do when someone hands you a gun or you pick up a gun is to make sure it is pointed in a safe direction ( usualy the ground) and then you check the chamber to make sure it is empty.
#3 NEVER put your finger through the trigger guard untill you are pointed at a safe target and intend to shoot it.
#4 when target shooting NO one Ever goes down range to check targets without first communicating with everyone present their intentions. No one will touch or handle a firearm in any way while ANYONE is down range checking/setting targets.
That should keep you guys alive. Have fun and clean that sticky chamber with Rem Oil.

Just so you Yanks don't get the wrong idea about us Canucks, we need special permits for hand guns, BUT most of us country folks have long guns.
Personally I prefer a shotgun over a hand gun any day, I don't have to be a good shot, just need to know how to pull the trigger and its pretty cheap for target practice, if you use Wall-mart sport shot.
Our climbing community has just as many gun enthusiasts, and some actually practice tactical shooting while others are avid hunters. I make no judgments, all I know is I prefer a few more dead deer than an increased food source for the local cougar population here in Princeton.
And we take manditory gun courses to get our firearm aquisition permit so we appreciate how lethal a firearm is.

Nice. Another Single Action fan.
Still one of my favorite guns is my Ruger Single Six with a 9 1/2 inch barrel. Cheap to shoot and own and a real tack driver.

Well, I kinda miss my US Army 11Bravo days. I got to shoot all these weapons (and more) and all the ammo was on the taxpayer. You guys didn't mind did you?
M16 w/grenade launcher
M14
Colt 45
M60
50 cal
Dragon Gun
All the grenades I could throw.
Claymore mines.
I was very partial to the M14. Very accurate weapon at long range. Great at semi-auto and automatic modes. Far superior to the M16.

Klimmer,
I question the ethical hubris of saying because we pay for it it is cheap for you.
That said I probably should have bifurcated the thread between .22s and everything else.

I've got some .380s, but like .22 shorts cost more than longs, the .380 ammo (sometimes called 9mm Kurz) often costs more than standard 9mm Parabellum.
Many operators consider the 9mm anemic, and look down further at the .380
I subscribe to the Israeli dictum that three things matter more than caliber. They are accuracy, accuracy and accuracy. LOL
But while not cheap to feed those Bersas are cheap to buy. I wonder how they hold up with sustained use.
I was recently admiring a Diamondback .380 selling for $329, but then I talked to my favorite dealer who said that 3 of the 4 he sold came back with problems.
Apparently good in concept but poor in execution.
