The essay (on being a teenage nerd in junior high school) was posted by ihateplastic, without properly citing the original source.
As Matt Gilchrist (whose multiple avatars include Roxjok and jonesyclimb) pointed out, it was copied/pasted from paulgraham.com .

My comment on the essay is that some junior highs were worse than others, but he seems to think they are all equally bad. I switched school districts from one more rural to another 20 miles away where many of the parents were engineers. There was respect for smart kids at this school, and we didn't call ourselves nerds. Some of us were jocks, cheerleaders, etc. Fights between kids were very rare. I was kind of surprised, really.

seriously if PTC is planning on anything other than lots of distance from that creep she need serious help and has a bleak looking future of cycles of abuse and possibly a murder suicide somewhere in her future.

Upon IHP's essay and unconnected to the discussion around PTC:

One important implicit variable is the grade of inner contra outer motivation. Some of the nerds are to a lesser extent motivated by external gratification and have unusual interests. Having a strong internal drive for something unusual and at the same time not being very much atuned to the opinions of others make them look "nerdy".

Being internally motivated is a good thing to be if you want to be a good learner and if you are a good learner you will end up as smart in your area of interests.

In American culture there is a very strong expectation of people being externally motivated. If I am in the media I am, if I am not in the media I am not. To be something is to be seen by others and being able to live up to other peoples expectations. Impression management becomes important. Some will just see this as a fall from the possibility of a more authentic life.

I cant help but think the original thread was actually the Rocky and Bullwinkle show with Boris and Natasha acted out in real life.

Lebs clueless attitude in this thread when she usually knows everything and has a lot to say about it is surreal.

PTC is reading this thread.

You know she's reading this thread.

It's like looking at a traffic accident you were in from the detached eyes of an outsider.

You know she's looking in.

Didn't she say she was taking a long trip to Mexico?
She might just be living a life instead of surfing the taco.

Oops. I did it. I just blew some of your minds.

My bad.

She's totally lurking (vibe in hand) and caring about what idiot anonymous strangers say...

About the "plagiarism"... Let's be clear that I never claimed it to be mine. I just felt it fit in well with the abstract nature of the previous thread and thus this one. Did I fail to credit? Yep, guess so. Whoops. It was nothing more than an oversight since those who spend time on this forum know I typically credit in BOLD any pic and I make sure people know it was not mine. Sorry for the offense.

Of course... didn't God plagerize from science?

Wow, went back through the original thread and can't beleive the skank-a-thon attack on PTC. A cute girl posts up, with a few photos, and gets attacked by some old skeezers for being cute and having fun.

Funny how you seem to not have noticed that there were men who posted a HELLOf a lot worse things that I did.

By all means - Please! Show me the scathing things I wrote that fall under your self-defined "skank0-a-thon."

I won't speak for any other women here, but from me, personally - Go to hell, loser.

I don't get it, mostly because I didn't think she was that cute. Average face. Blond, i'll give her that. I don't know what all you guys were seeing beyond the topless shots. Plenty of climbing (and non climbing) chicks out there who are in way better shape, plenty of whom post on this site (my flabby self not included)
