I know I've seen that purple guidebook before but don't recall if it's for Josh. That would explain the riddle.

Wow, those are some good guesses!
Werner you are correct but not specific enough.
Tardy - tape is aid and you know that he won't run it unless he's got a goby (I mean "humidity-slide") the size of a silver dollar.
Offwhite - true we need a new guidebook but what will we ever do with the 4 copies of the '92 guide we run now?
Steelmonkey - is correct but should be disqualified as he was there that day.
Scuffy B- took it a bit further for the correct answer.
On this particular day, Russ was all jazzed to get up in some off-width. At which time he started to prep by taping his right hand and cutting off the sleeve to his Megalith shirt to make a knee guard. It was at least another 2 weeks before he cut off the other sleeve to match.

What's truly missing....our #4 camalot that since that day has never been seen again. Who's got that thing?

You should also know that this was the third day in a row of wide climbing, with Russ in shorts all 3 days and no improv knee guard on days 1 & 2.
Did the knee pad help? You tell me:

Calling that shirt sleeve a "knee guard" or "knee pad" is like calling a potato cannon the precursor to the Space Shuttle.
