Back in the 80s we did a lot of quirky covers---Carpenters, "Brandy", "Edmund Fitzgerald", a "Goobers and Raisinets" jingle, etc. Here's "Spinning Wheel":

Great covers I'll leave you to google: Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah", Eva Cassidy's ... well, everything, Husker Du's "Eight Miles High" and "Love is All Around (theme from Mary Tyler Moore)", Rufus Wainwright's "Across the Universe", Radio Birdman's "Aloha Steve and Dano (theme from Hawaii 5-0)", Randy Scruggs' "Both Sides Now", Ray Charles' "Georgia" and "America the Beautiful", The Who's "(Love is like a) Heatwave", The Animals "House of the Rising Sun", Fleetwood Mac's "Shake your Money-Maker",
Smashing Pumpkins' "Dancing in the Moonlight": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2OOtTBrxgE
And here's a pretty good Vlad Horowitz cover of an old Beethoven tune:

And if you've made it through all that, here's a real thread killer, one of the most awful songs ever recorded: William Shatner covering Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

This is sort of a reverse. Steve Miller's first recording of Mercury Blues, years before he recorded
it for a Steve Miller album.

I think this is Boz Skaggs on the vocal.
I've always been so disappointed by Miller's later recordings of this.

It boggles the mind that nobody has referenced The Clash's cover of "Police and Thieves". Makes me wanna go into an old-fashioned rant.

I love covers that go in a totally different direction, changing the mood, texture, or rhythm of the song. One of the best of those IMHO, is Crooked Fingers' cover of Prince's When You Were Mine. Still one of my favorite covers, up there with the Gin and Juice cover by The Gourds, Dynamite Hack's version of Boys In The Hood, and tons of Grateful Dead covers, of which my favorite is probably the Dead doing Merle Haggard's Sing Me Back Home.
