I resent that, FWIW....
Wasn't just aimed at you, Steve. You're hardly the only one here with a closed mind. Of the double handful of people that regularly post on the political threads, from either the left or the right, almost none have open minds. The world is a hugely complex place, and ideological intransigence will never make it simpler or better.
Callie knows that, which is why I assumed she must have suffered some kind of brain trauma to post her question. Although, I suppose she might just be really drunk.

Well, I'm just amazed you feel that way about me. I am a conservative and have corresponding principles that can bend sometimes, and other times not.
I do have an open mind. But I also have core principles and ideals that will not be compromised, as Obama insists. I guess that is what you're talking about.
As I've said before, compromise isn't necessarily right. People think it is always good. It's not, IMO.
Cheers.

Dr. F, isn't that a Texas A&M military uni he's sporting? Being an LSU fan and having had to face the Aggies on numberous okasions on the football field and track and field, etc., we always had respect and never called them Nazis. You'd laugh your arse off watching them do pushups in that gig on the sidelines after scoring. I know you're reeking on Perry, but at least qualify it.
Your one true friend,
Mimi

Have tou watched the movie. " To big to Fail"
It is very good.
I finally saw it tonight. It was wonderfully acted. These guys actually scared the Sh*t out of me, particularly Bernanke, when he said that if they did not take action THAT DAY, then next monday, there would BE no financial market, and that it would be just like the Great Depression, only much, much worse.
Here is why our system failed:

Ha! I went to bed and missed some funny posts last night.
Bluey - read a bit more about the jobs. TX always does well when oil is high. I grew up seeing bumper stickers on cars reading "Let them freeze in the dark." The rest of the countries pain is TX's gain in terms of oil prices. That is part of the reason jobs are doing okay in TX (this is the normal economic cycle there though, nothing anyone - he or any previous gov or lt. gov. has done). Also, read about the QUALITY of the other jobs. I think quality matters. I am certainly not trying to change your mind on him but I thought you'd want to know.
Educational system is not good and getting worse. The plans (especially for higher ed) are awful. And did you know that Perry was a proponent for, and claims credit for, giving illegals in state tuition? Not that I'm saying that is good or bad, but that is what Perry has campaigned on - this good deed he did. Not sure you'd dig that because I think you've discussed your feelings on it before (maybe I'm wrong).
And Ghost - haha! Not drunk and I don't remember slipping and whacking my head. But I did shake my head for getting in the mix here. I never learn.
:)
edit: and yes Mimi, he's and a proud Aggie.

Dr F,
Where do you get your figures? I got the following from your very own
World Socialist Web Site:
"States with the highest rates of food stamp usage are Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee, New Mexico, Michigan and Louisiana—all with more than 19 percent of the population on federal food assistance. Unemployment rates in these states have been higher for a longer period than in other states"

Bluering, here's the thing champ:
You continually make these claims that Obama administration economic policies "have made it worse" or "didn't work". But you don't have the intellectual capacity or curiousity to do the hard work of looking at the data, digging into the intimate details of the programs, or understanding the effect the conservative alternatives would have had.
You repeatedly claim you were "promised" unemployment would be 8%. I don't recall any "promises" I recall projections. You seem to conveniently forget that TARP was a George W Bush/Hank Paulson program. When GOP obstructionism is pointed out you repeatedly whine that "he had the house and the senate" somehow missing the unprecendented abuse of the filibuster in the Senate and the de-facto need for 60 votes in the Senate to pass anything, which made Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both republicans, the most powerful people in Washington from 2008-2010.
You bitch about stimulus not working when every real analysis of its effect show that it ameliorated the effects of the downturn INCLUDING the GOP economist Douglas Holtz-Eakin who set out to prove the stimulus didn't work and had no multiplier effect and in fact proved it had an almost 2x multiplier. Whoops...
http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2011/08/it-looks-stimulus-worked-after-all
And yet the GOP insisted that a large portion of the stimulus be tax cuts and just as the Democrats pointed out, the multiplier effect of those are much less than funds that go to projects or unemployment extensions, rendering the stimulus less effective than it would have been without GOP influence. Construct the thing the way the administration wanted it, and you'd likely have hit the unemployment projections that came out of Romer's shop.
And speaking of UI, you whine about it being too long and making people lazy, at a time when there are 5 job applicants for every opening. 5000 people showing up at a big box store opening to apply for the 110 low wage jobs. Yeah, they're just sitting on their ass taking a handout because they're "lazy", the no-jobs bit has NOTHING to do with it. We should just cut them off and then see what happens when a bunch of desperate people can't feed, clothe, or house themselves. I can't imagine that suicide and crimer rates would go up, those people will surely just chose to starve in the gutter quietly.
You seems to miss the fact that the biggest concern for businesses is a LACK OF DEMAND. Not the govt "being in the way", not "excessive tax burden", but demand. Corporations are sitting on record levels of cash, they aren't broke and bled-dry from taxation, and they aren't adding jobs because there is stagnant demand. Yet the conservative solution is so-called austerity...a "solution" that reduces demand. Genius!
You embody the whole "GOP Daddy" contingent who think the most important characteristic of an executive is a smack talking tough guy. I don't know what it is in the psyche of these folks, but it is a clear pattern.
In short, you're an ignorant buffoon without the desire nor the ability to understand the topics you are so eager to opine upon. Now go turn on your Michael Savage show and have a nice day.
