So, bluering, have you ever served in the military? What branch? How long? Did you see action?

Never served, Ap. Does that mean anything? I can't be proud of the US military?
I was a Boy Scout though.

They had F-15 pilots fly the Raptor against 5 F-15's. The F-22 won.
You are aware the 15 was designed in the late 60s and went into service mid 70s right? And you think it's noteworthy that it underperforms a modern aircraft?
22 v 35, you seem to not understand that they are designed for different roles with the 35 being a multi purpose jack of all trades fighter and the 22 being primarily air superiority with ability to perform other roles.
Expecting nuance from morons is a little much I suppose, but I at least expect chickenhawks to do a little DD on their fetish areas.

Yes, I am aware of that. Ever hear of a B-2, F-117, or an A-10?
We don't need a 'multi-task' fighter. We need a replacement for the F-15. The F-35 is a Euro-pandering Nato job.

Of course you can (and should) be proud of our military.
Most of the people I know who have served in various branches and saw real action just don't talk about their service or the might of the military with terms such as 'badass!!'. Hell, they oftentimes don't talk much about it at all.
It always strikes me as particularly naive (and more than a little ignorant) when I hear people fawn and gush over US military firepower, when their primary experience with it is via pictures, movies, air shows, etc.

The F-35 is intended as a follow on to the F-16, F-15E fighter bomber, and Harrier in the USMC version, NOT the single seat F-15 fighters.

Why we talking about newer jets on a WW2 forum?, unless its the Me-262 or ME-163, maybe we ought to start a new "Jets" thread.
It don't matter to me, just sayin.

Nice pics DMT,
Man, can you imagine what it must of looked like to see the actual Normandy or Okinawa landings with hundreds of ships and planes.
the scene from "Flags of our Fathers" captures it pretty well I assume.

Thanks for making the point of my OP. You people don't get it do you?
Never again. Remember and learn from the past.
We were caught off-guard in WW2. We were not prepared. We are now. Ya know why?
Thrust-vectoring in the F-22.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTCGJAoAz_8&feature=related
Unbelievable.... We're prepared because of thrust-vectoring in the F-22?
We are prepared if we understand potential risks and match strategy and equipment to those risks. I'm pretty sure out-going SecDef Gates is more capable of judging those risks than you, and he felt that we had enough F-22s and that the money was better spent elsewhere.
WWII is not a good analogy to any potential future conflict with Russia/China/India/Pakistan. There were no nukes hanging over anyone's head in WWII until the last days (and then it was those that prompted surrender, not increasing air superiority over Japan). Large-scale conventional war with a major power is very unlikely because of the nuke threat. And other types of conflicts are adequately handled by what we already have.

He ain't using it as a plan, but as a warning to be READY. With the largest military in the world, its hard to see how there is any worry about that. But then there are plenty of folks who worry. Seems weird to me. A bigger worry is running out of money to fund the whole danged mess.
Then there is the whole nuke thing.

Moosie,
You omitted two letters. It should read:

This occurred to me the other day. Since Costa Rica has never had an army
how come nobody has taken their freedom away? I mean it's a pretty nice place
especially compared to Russia and Iran, to name a few. OK, Russia has good
climbing but nobody steals a country for its climbing.

DMT,
Apparently you didn't read my tome to PitonRon on Zhukov's planned defense
to Operation Barbarosa. The 'deep echelon' defense gives up the front lines
(kinda like a loss-leader at the grocery store) but then falls back on their
strategic reserves. In the case (bad pun) of the Stoli Defense they have
immense strategic reserves in their bath-tubs - they can hold out a looong time.
Well, as long as the potato mash lasts, anyway.
