I have always loved Crumb's illustrative style, certainly the best of the era. I mostly overlook the misogynistic stuff, but I am very interested in his views of cultural and (especially) music history. Crumb is a major collector of 78rpm records, and has issued numerous compilations from his collection. The above mentioned book about old blues and jazz is a great deal at $13+, hardbound and including a great disc of stuff from the Crumb archive of recordings.

My favorite Crumb book may be Odds and Ends, which is just miscellaneous casual and commercial art jobs: small town newspaper blurbs, business cards, invitations to potluck suppers, gig announcements, portraits of favorite historical musicians, etc.

I've seen examples of the cards he created for Hallmark™ early in his career, but they don't seem to be jumping up on google right now....

I love Robert's work, Mr. Natural and Flakey Foont some of the faves. I've got a few up in the archives that I got while in junior high (early '70s). It was new stuff back then.
The unwanted publicity from the movie "Crumb" led Robert to pack up the family and move to France.
His ability to draw his ideal fantasy version of the female form is remarkable, what a great artist.
I remember one episode where Flakey hooks up with a female sasquatch and finds life in the woods to be pretty darn good.

Riding my bike the other day, I saw Maxon walking down the street here in SF. he's the Crumb brother, who in the movie sat on a bed of nails, and pulled down the woman's pants in Safeway. what an outrageous scene that was!

he used to panhandle, sitting full lotus on the sidewalk, until he started selling his drawings 5 or 6 years ago. was the 1st time I've seen him in quite a few years now.

Here's Crumb and I in NYC at the gallery opening for his new book, "The Book of Genesis", earlier this year.

The Checkered Demon was a route put up in Washington at that time by my ol'

Thanks stunewberry and for anyone looking at this with 65 year old eyes, don't forget to click to enlarge.

EDIT: BTW Tom Frost (now that's a name to remember), no need to apologize I think Crumb would have liked it.
