Wow (Peter), that shot is kind of otherworldly. To think those may have been Michael's last moments strikes me as really odd. Not really sure really how I feel about it. I had to revisit that shot a few times before finally posting my thoughts.

Ultimately though, I look at it and I smile. I see Michael in his element, living in the moment. Happy. Free. I look at the picture a certain way and it almost appears like he's born aloft by the waters. Remarkable.

Funny this thread was on the front page this morning. We took our pet noob climbing on Beethoven's last night and I was telling him about meeting Michael for the first time at the top of it.. similar to The Chief's story.. I was dinking around setting up the top rope and Reardon came popping up over the edge after soloing the arete. I actually didn't know who he was for a long time. He was always friendly and polite. Definitely a missed presence.

A couple more pictures taken just before it happened...

1st is at the Gap of Dunloe, a narrow mountain pass between MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Purple Mountain in County Kerry...

2nd is same place as Peter Haan's picture above, Valentia Island.
Ireland's most westerly point lying off County Kerry...[photoid=402937]

I was in Portmagee this past summer (2014). The pub there still has Michael's picture on the wall, and I had a good long chat with some of the fishermen who still remember him fondly. Some fun rocks out on Valentia. Beautiful spot.

Margee Kelly had a great picture of Reardon climbing nude at the Needles in her lookout before the fire.

Michael lived the way he wanted too until the very end.

Inspirational.
