Holland was certainly disappointing in the first half but the interjection
of energy by Elia almost single-handedly changed the game. Kuyt was his
usual omnipresent force. Sneijder impressive if not dominant.
Halftime - Cameroun/Japan Cameroun seems to think this is a friendly - no
sense of purpose or energy and a typical defensive lapse. How do you let
Honda go unmarked at the back post? Sacre bleu! Allez Lions Indomptables!

Brazil so smooth and fluid, N. Korea very coordinated
both beating the hell out of each other

I can't actually watch anything that seriously ends in a tie. Just can't do it.

Kind of strange. North Korea is a repressive hellhole of a country ruled by the worst possible kind of dictator.
But the PRK players were playing very hard, and Brazil was not looking all that "beautiful". I actually ended up rooting for the Koreans. Glad they grabbed that one at the end, as their hard play deserved it.

Will there be more 1/1 ties or 0/0 ties?

It seems to me one of the main themes so far, besides the ties, has been the poor mistakes made by the various keepers (except Tim Howard).
Anyone else notice this?

Do not agree with their politics. This is amazing considering they are the lowest rated Soccer team.
North Korea played a more beautiful game.

I didn't watch Brasil but said that anything less than 4-0 would be
a disaster. Funny how good teams play down to the level of bad opponents.
I'd have loved to hear the azz-wringing Dunga laid on 'em afterwards.
Cote d'Ivoire looked very impressive against Portugal who, aside from
Ronaldo's blast, was timorous at best. Sven Goran had the Elephants'
playing a well-organized and flowing game; pity they couldn't finish
some good chances. Drogba's brief appearance almost paid off with his
one touch but didn't get any support. If he is able to go full speed soon
they could go far.

I am speechless after the Swiss defeat of Spain 1-0...no points for possession...only balls in the back of the net count

Some good defending and some good luck helped the Swiss. The Spaniards looked stunned. This loss may line them up against a tough opponent in the next round.
I say Germany is the new favorite.

How can anyone be surprised by another 1-0 game?
Yeah the odds are that the team that has more possession is going to have the "1" and not the "0," but if that makes you speechless, you must be speechless most of the time (probably a good thing, ha ha).
WILL EVERYONE PLEASE STOP PRETENDING THAT THESE 1-0 GAMES ARE INTERESTING?

We should persuade Patrick Sawyer to tell us about the France-West Germany semi-final in 1982, which he attended. It's considered one of the greatest football games ever.

Spain was my pick to win the whole thing, but no mas. No team has ever gone on to win the cup after losing their first game. Looks like they've reverted to their typical underachieving ways.

Im amazed that the Swiss were able hold off the Spanish attacks.
I'm not as the Spanish attack was rather predictable; skilled but predictable so
not too hard to deal with for an organized defense.
They either attacked down the flank and crossed it in or came straight
down the pike with all their trademark short passes. In either case it
didn't seem too hard for the Swiss to keep their big bodies in front of the
ball. Did y'all note that there were only two Swiss shorter than 6'-2"?
You aren't going to win too many high balls against them. They didn't look too slow either.
They were also missing their best player who might return soon.
Chile looked very impressive. It would be nice if they were able to advance.
Diego Forlan certainly seems to have unlocked the key to keeping the new ball down. It is called good fundamentals: plant foot close, head down, and knee over the ball. Is it too much to ask of the world's best players to do the same?
