Feck Couchmaster let's just fecking NUKE North Korea and Iran as well. Fecking commies and towel heads. I am getting sick and tired of the pansy-ass liberals. And let's NUKE South Africa, because we all know that this year's World Cup will just subjugate American policy, values and the whole way of American life. Send in James Bond, he will sort these slanted-eyed gooks in North Korea. I don’t care if he is a fecking Englishman (or Scotsman or Irishman, depending on your take). And feck Largo, Venezuela is going down, NUKE them too. My blood is boiling, I want my pound of flesh.

It is no secret in the intelligence community (is that an oxymoron?) that fecking spick Chavez allowed the gook North Koreans to use Caracas as a base to wage a secret war on America. This is an ACT OF WAR, so feck the UN (Useless body of Nobodies), launch the missiles against that fecking spick Chavez and those gooks in Pyongyang, and take down those backward towel heads in Tehran as well. When that happens I will sit down and have a glass of chardonnay and merlot (wait a minute, I hate those varieties, fecking French don't know their wine).

EDIT I know that the use of towel heads, spicks, gooks etc may be offensive and I totally use them with tongue in cheek, heck I am a product of Oirish, German (kraut), Welsh (we welsh on people), Scottish (best penny pinchers next to the S*iss), and Limey (hey what better way to fight scurvy people) I won't mention the Cherokee bit. But I sincerely hope that I have not offended anybody. This EDIT does not come from any complaint but perhaps some people do not know tongue in cheek, or in my case head up me' arse.

This could get even worse if they can't stop the flow soon or if the drill pipe collapses. If the spill wraps around Florida's east coast and wrecks the northern Gulf beaches, this will be much much worse than the Valdez. What a disaster! The results of the investigation won't come out soon enough. The new regulations that will result from this will also drive the price of fuels up. Way to go BP!

Rok, the pics are from a friend who got them from the guy who was actually at the scene.

"If the spill wraps around Florida's east coast and wrecks the northern Gulf beaches, this will be much much worse than the Valdez."

Yes, mainly because it will be happening right in the yards of millions of Americans, as opposed to Exxon-Valdez, which happened 'somewhere else'. While the pictures from the E-V disaster resonated heavily with the country, it won't be anywhere close to the reaction that we'll see when the muck coats the beaches where millions live and work.

"The new regulations that will result from this will also drive the price of fuels up."

Don't forget lawsuits. And Repubs will take advantage of the political opportunity to pin these 'silly, unnecessary, expensive, nanny-state' regulations on the Dems. Give this disaster a few more weeks to unfold, then let's ask the country if stronger regulations and monitoring would have been a good idea.

from an AP story: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gIXWYBTpLtSayJtg41LKXpxSxVPAD9FESFV01

"The spill and the spreading is getting so much faster and expanding much quicker than they estimated," said Hans Graber, executive director of the university's Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing.

In an exploration plan and environmental impact analysis filed with the federal government in February 2009, BP said it had the capability to handle a "worst-case scenario" at the site, which the document described as a leak of 162,000 barrels per day from an uncontrolled blowout — 6.8 million gallons each day."

In comparison, the Exxon Valdez spilled 10.8 million U.S. gallons....

And what kind of country produces films like Milk, The Whales of August and It's a Wonderful Life. I want to see Predator, Terminator, RoboCop, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, oh yeah and Cliffhanger, not films about old fogies and fags. Where is Sarah Palin when her country needs her? Out shooting rabbits when she should be shooting fags, fogies and the liberal jews in Hollywood. I am mad as hell, where's my fecking tea?

Some people may love the smell of napalm in the morning but as for me, let the oil flow, I love beaches and birds covered in oil.

What totally sucks about this whole thing is the timing. Tropical depressions can start forming towards the end of May and there are also significant bird migrations going on at this time of year.

The military needs to jump in with their underwater capabilities and deal with the leaks. Right now. Forget about who pays for this at the moment....get the leaks contained!

It looks like the LA coast may be mostly spared but Mobile Bay and Florida are in the current path. The high winds have been from the south but the currents are carrying the oil to the east. If they can get this thing capped ASAP, there's still hope.

This is such a disaster, true, but hey, why is everyone shocked that its happened?

It's happened several times already in the North Sea, happened in Australia only last year. This is the cost of a consumer society, one that the US, Australia and Europe has been pushing for years. A society that is based on continual economic growth, on consuming the very world that we live on. You could argue that the probability of drilling in such deep water and in a hurricane prone area that this disaster should of happened years ago. Its a disaster that's been waiting to happen.

What is really sad though, is that the majority of people in the world couldn't care less. Like they couldn't care less about coal ships running aground in the Great Barrier Reef, or the destruction of Indonesian rain forest to make palm oil so we can have cheap chocolate and hair care products. And a myriad of other consumer driven disasters that are happening all over the globe.

If people really cared about the environment or the condition of the planet, and what multinational corporations get away with, they wouldn't vote for conservative governments.

"It's happened several times already in the North Sea, happened in Australia only last year."

Several people on this thread (and in the media in general) have exclaimed their fears that this spill could eclipse the Exxon-Valdez in amount and impact of US spills. For a bit of perspective on historic oil spills, check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oil_spills

The E-V is way, way down on the list, and the vast majority of major spills occurred elsewhere in the world. It's disconcerting to see the US-centric view of this (or any other) disaster- we are all freaked out about how horrible and record setting it is/could be, when in reality there have been far, far worse around the world.

We really are a self-oriented society (I say as I type into petroleum-derived computer).

We deserve it because we're such a rotten country. We use like most of the earth's resources, so it's only fair that when something terrible happens, it happens to us.

Better here than elsewhere.

Great Barrier Reef oil disaster fear from stricken ship

A Chinese ship is in danger of breaking up after running aground off north-east Australia, sparking fears of a major oil spill into the Great Barrier Reef.

The Shen Neng 1, carrying 950 tonnes of oil (~280 gallons/tonne?), ran aground 70km (43 miles) off the east coast of Great Keppel Island.

Some oil has already leaked and there are fears the coal-carrier may split into parts, causing a greater spillage.

The Australian authorities say the ship was in a protected area, well outside the normal shipping channels.

Chemical dispersants are being used to prevent the spill threatening the World Heritage-listed marine reserve.

There has already been one failed attempt to refloat the 230-metre (754-ft) vessel. Its fuel tank, carrying 150 tonnes, has been punctured.

Sign on the times, and yet unlikely that we'll learn.

Why did Obama agree to start up more drilling offshore? Cause Peak Oil is barking at our doorstep. When gas starts costing $6 a gallon, then $8 a gallon (and beyond) then it's only a matter of time before we drill the arctic, drill offshore, and on and on.

You watch. This spill will only slow the painful call to drill everywhere. We've addressed the energy crisis too slow and now it will get painful in the transition between a sustainable future and the dying past.

Peace

Thrill baby thrill. I like the action, burning smoke and crude, which is sort of rude dude, kill off the oceans and then we do not have to worry about rising coastlines swallowing much of the Pacific nations and elsewhere. Dig it man dig it and elsewhere. Dig that ground and ocean floors to get to that... wait a minute is that Jed or Jethro I hear

Come 'n listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed
And then one day, he was shootin' at some food
And up through the ground come a bubblin' crude
Oil, that is, black gold, Texas tea

Well, the first thing you know, old Jed's a millionaire
Kin folk said, Jed, move away from there
Said, Californy is the place you oughta be
So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly
Hills, that is, swimmin' pools, movie stars

Well, now it's time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin
They would like to thank you folks for kindly droppin' in
You're all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin' helpin' of their hospitality
Hillbilly, that is, set a spell, take your shoes off

OIL THAT IS, BLACK GOLD, TEXAS TEA

I could play around with the lyrics a bit (mountaineer?) but...

BETCHA' THE TEA PARTY LOVE THAT BLACK TEA

Petrol (gas that is) is pretty dear here in Ireland, so I bicycle when I can, and when I drive it is a little VW Polo that doesn't take the amount of petrol that the ever-so-popular SUVs suck up.

A couple of good news points if there can be with a situation like this.

BP - This could have happened to a much smaller local company in which case the most they could have done is throw up their hands and say sorry. BP has deep pockets (and this is going to require deep pockets) and really cares at least about their reputation. They will be working hard and paying big to mitigate this thing.

Gulf crude - It has been a long time since I worked out there but as I remember "gulf crude" is a lot lighter than the stuff that spilled off the EV. That mean a lot more of this will evaporate.

To a point made above. Military subs would be of no use dealing with the well-head. That requires subs/robots designed specifically for that purpose.

And to who ever said it above, I agree that we do tend to forget far worse spills that have happened in other parts of the world.
