When Lydon called punk a fashion statement?
For him it always was a fashion statement. They were a manufactured band, where music was second to the whole product.
Don't get me wrong, the Pistols have their moments, but sh#t- sid couldn't play the bass, he just looked the part and got real famous.
If you just listen to the music, now that the hype has died, the pistols had some good stuff, but not alot.
The best bands always write the best songs cuz they take song writing seriously.

There is no energy like good punk energy. I saw Iggy and Stooges BITD. Talk about raw. The Rotters were a local band in SB that were pretty fun (anyone remember "Sit on my face, Stevie Nicks"?) All time favorite was the Dead Kennedys at the I-Beam in Berkley. When they did "Holiday in Cambodia" total mayhem ensued. Might be my favorite punk song.
Almost forgot the Poques! Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is a classic!

Timid, love the poster of the boots- My dad has a poster of cowboy boots doing the some thing.
Sheep and Rebels at the same time but we all grow old.
No one has said anything yet about the Screamers One of the most underated bands ever. The singer later became a fell known folk artist. I lucked into one of his paintings a few years ago and I will post it when I get into my damn photo bucket account. Tomata Du Plenty!!!

Sor Juana Inez de la cruz

She was on of a group of painting he did on women writers he liked. Lucked out and wound this for sale on the web. She is also on the 200 peso note in Mexico.
Now one of my favorite paintings in the house- punk rock and folk art go together sometimes.

Never seen them live- are you saying they are more punk, or don't play well.
I'm thinking the recorded version of whirlpool- that lick is not punk, but is it cool.
I've been reading through all these bands on this thread, many of whom are among my favorite bands, but I don't really think of as punk.
My definition is off maybe. Is grunge an off shoot of punk or metal? Should the word be retired?
Definitions aren't really needed though, it's the stick we wind our conversation around.
The important part is to remember the good bands.
So I'll add the Mighty Bosstones- as much ska as they are punk. Possibly the best live show I ever went to.

Sebadoh is Lou Barlow's band (bassist from Dinosaur Jr.) formed after the falling out with J.
Saw Leftover Crack in Luzern Switzerland a couple of years ago. The singer kept telling the audience that they all got rich on Nazi gold. It was the bassists birthday and they ended up winging some crappy Pixies covers. The guitarist got pissed and walked off. Heard later that they ended up owing the promoter a bunch of money after being f*#ked up for the whole tour.

Awww, the Meat Puppets were punk as fuuck. I saw them at Nino's, a grimy punk rock bar in Tucson circa 1986. Oh, they started out crisp enough, but the show degenerated into a fabulous slop-a-thon culminating in a staggering trash the drum kit and sprawl into the crowd spectacle. Those guys were punk in every way that matters.
Damn but I saw a lot of great bands at that bar 85-86: MP of course, Naked Prey (tucson's version of the Wipers), Sidewinders, U and the Risk (nogales mx punk band) Crazy 8's (pdx ska band, played their hearts out for two sets to a crowd of 18), The Church, Phantom Limbs (tucson thunderf*#k acoustic punk wonders), Deadbolts, and a host of other bands. Bar was 8 blocks from my house, ahh the gawd damned glory days.

Hah, Mike, I've come out of the closet as a bass player - I now play in the bedroom. I'm probably the suckiest player who's ever played for 18 years, but 1000 watts of power makes it all sound good to my damaged hearing.
