//I've heard great things about Isuzus for a budget SUV, but it seems the OP is looking for a better ride for more money. Same thing with an Aerostar, maybe a good choice for a low budget ride, but a break down on a road trip when you have limited free time isn't worth the savings for many people.
Another option is two vehicles. A daily driver and a road trippin vehicle. You can get a newer full size 2WD van like a Chevy Express pretty cheap they'll go a long time and you can beat on it without much worry.//
This thread is too funny. Just when someone says their Isuzu gets 300k + miles and its a sweet ride, people discount it because it isnt DOPE enough of a ride.
So yeah, go ahead and get an Audi or a Eurovan. While you are driving around looking DOPE, we will be climbing.
You should try to understand my posts before making a dumb comment.
Yeah the OP is going to replace a late model full size pickup with a camper with a 1992 Roach...
If you think an Audi or a Eurovan is DOPE (lol, who says DOPE?) I don't want to see the ditch weed you've been smoking. Try a Sportsmobile or a Sprinter RV. But suggesting a $70,000 vehicle to the OP is about as useful as suggesting a $1,000 ride.

I was feeling bad last week, or maybe eco-guilty, as I was up and back to Donner Summit to climb with Jaybro, 412 mile round trip, for me, I-580 to I-205 to I-5 to I-80 and back, averaged 64 mph for the trip... doing the speed limit the whole way (mostly 70 mph) in my 1989 VW Westie 510OW...
...I only got 25.9 mpg
on returning from a day trip to Tuolumne yesterday in Oakdale I filled up at the Vallero and saw I had gotten 32.3 mpg out of the beast, mostly because I was doing the speed limit, which is considerably slower on that trip, and didn't count the Altamont Pass leg which is windy, hilly and generally less gas efficient...
Now I have had my issues with this car, but it seems, in principle, that the diesel technologies provide much better efficiencies than gas engines. With the addition of non-fossil-diesel fuels (which greatly reduce soot production) it would seem a technology for the future...
Yet it is rare to find people running diesel rigs...
...my mashup has a bunch of head aches, but it is certainly not a production vehicle at this point, and the bugs seem to be slowly leaving the system.
Just a thought for the climbers' vehicle thread...
..Leo, what did you eventually get for a vehicle?

Mattq331 is right . . . Audi's rule! You will have to sleep outside however and high clearance roads will be an issue, but for all other conditions, especially curves, icy roads and long drives, there is no substitute.
