What was the linkage--if any--between Whillans and Brown and the later partnership of Tasker and Boardman? My sense of history on that side of the pond is a kind of sketchy, but Tasker's account of the 1976 ascent of Changabang is a thing of (intense) beauty.

A fine fellow named Stanley Norrie sent me this excellent Joe Brown interview which appeared in Rocksport magazine in 1968. First of several that he sent.

Thanks for sharing this with us Stanley!

Who was responsible for the morbid appellation ‘Cenotaph Corner’?

I bet the name preceded Joe Brown as I suspect folks eyeballed the hell out of that one ahead of his arrival. My collection of early British guides isn't so good as to yield an answer to your question but I will keep looking.

Steve,

I've just stumbled on this.......

The name of 'Cenotaph Corner' corner may indeed predate Brown's ascent. The 'Cenotaph Corner Finish', a severe which follows the line above the ledge was climbed (and presumably named) in 1939......

Nice find Blakey!
I suspect there was plenty of morbid conversation surrounding Cenotaph Corner from very early on as it certainly would beg to be climbed but at what cost to the leader. LOL
Who established the 1938 route that you described?

R Hind and J E Q Barford.......Oct 21 1939

I think both were Climbers Club members (Barford certainly was he has an obit in the CC journal).

A quick search doesn't reveal much about Hind.

Coincidentally there is a current thread on UK Climbing (Rocktalk) on the naming of Cenotaph Corner. The information on there is that it was named by Welsh activist Menlove Edwards in the 1930s--and is very consistent with Edwards' 'style' of naming climbs. One entry mentions a reference that Edwards top-roped the route (or attempted to do so) during that era--he surely had the ability.
