"I contented myself with trying to make him a man, such a man as he might have been," writes Stegner in the book's introduction, "with his legend at his feet like a lengthening shadow."
Defriending Joe Hill: Stegner's lesson for the Oscars
http://www.hcn.org/articles/defriending-joe-hill-stegners-lesson-for-the-oscars
The above article from High Country News lays out the same idea as the one upthread about the Know-Nothings and Martin Scorcese's movie Gangs of New York.
As for Stegner, his novel Joe Hill is a very good read.
I'm still trying to find a way into the novel I'd like to write about my Nana and her man, Leonard Larson the heavy equipment operator. I'd like it if it could be half as good as Wallace Stegner's Big Rock Candy Mountain.
Or the one Ring Lardner wrote about Jack Keefe, the ballplayer, in You Know Me, Al, another of my favorites from the early twentieth century; meaning that you know how I hate outlining and have relied on SOC and whimsy.
"Jack Keefe is a headstrong, gullible, cheap, naive, self-centred, egotistical and uneducated rube -- but he has a strong pitching arm."--Wiki
Words of Whimsy about Lenna and Timmsy would be too hard to rhyme, too. I haven't the need or desire to write whimsically about my own fam dambly, or do I?
You think you know me, pal, but I'm still not here.
Were it a song that I was writing, it would be "gal" instead of pal.
"Where'd ya learn to write like that, MFM?"
"Incomprehensible gibberish and drunken mumbles."

When you know how you feel, it's easy to deal
With the other guy.
SHOW him he's wrong, and EDUCATE him instead of bombing his place of worship, disrespecting his flag, the symbol of UNITY, which is never more than an ideal in the first place, or by burning his store to the ground.
Stained glass shards from the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church
in BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, in 1963.
Four girls died when it was bombed and this galvanized the Civil Rights Movement.
RIP:

Addie Mae Collins, 14.
Bernadine Mathews, 15.
Denise McNair, 11.
Sarah Collins, Addie Mae's younger sister, survived.

We love to get out and away into the wild
We hate to read of or hear 'bout the death of a child
Because some moron heard another moron talking and went wild
and decided to...
shoe bomb a plane-load of travelers
fly an airplane into a skyscraper or pentagon
kidnap an innocent heiress
send a letter bomb
murder a pregnant actress and her friends
douse a field of weed with paraquat
drive drunk in spite of all warnings
or use a book of matches instead of a Zippo

If Jorma an Jack were forming the band today could it be Hot Shit!! Come to think of it, I don't think that name would be allowed in the Finnish Brotherhood Hall.
Where did HT come from? "I really would like to know" - The clue is here:

I went trollin' for tuna 'n' came back accompanied by two of the Tuna Hotties, the groupies of the group.
They were inventive.
So was I. Normally trollin' never catches any self-respectin' tunas.
The Hotties weren't self-respectin' in the slightest bit, however.
They said they liked a bit more flash than Hot Tuna provided.
They got taken by the spinnin' spoon.
They offered to cook me a tuna casserole but I asked 'em not to and would they please just give me a tuna sandwich.

Tuna Fish Taco.
YAK!
Sushi Taco.
Might like that.
MooseParticles, R U up for a trip to the South Bay and some surf-riding?
And Gnome, I checked out young Otto's list.
I got a beef with #18. H.H. Braun, et al. "Emittance Growth and Energy Loss due to Coherent Synchrotron Radiation in the Bunch Compressor of the CLIC Test Facility (CTF-II)" Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams, 3,122402 (2000).
But I'll call Doc Hartouni and we'll see about a field trip to do some Phys. Rev. and possibly write up a full-scale TR with pix and vids whenever he can get away from his duties as a climber, family man, and guidebook editor.
I got a kick out of wigglers, though.

from the novice thread after your pic was added this is his first post to the Cart on wheels selling some inter Rastafari mexican wrapped food,
@MouseFrom, you've got me all distracted like a dog spotting a squirrel. I have heard that there is/was a guy who specialized in establishing 'rappel routes' in Yosemite. Is one of the fellows in this photo, that guy? Not that I have a strong interest in rappel routes per-se. I don't like rappelling much at all. Ironic I guess, for making my first post in this forum to ask a question about rappelling.

"If you’re faced with a big question and the answer is not Yes!!!!" then the answer is no.
-One of the McNamaras (Chris or Robert Strange)
McNamara [the strange one]was a numbers guy. Appointed the U.S. secretary of defense when tensions in Vietnam rose in the early 1960s, he insisted on getting data on everything he could. Only by applying statistical rigor, he believed, could decision makers understand a complex situation and make the right choices. The world in his view was a mass of unruly information that—if delineated, denoted, demarcated, and quantified—could be tamed by human hand and fall under human will. McNamara sought Truth, and that Truth could be found in data. Among the numbers that came back to him was the “body count.”

January 5, 1967
Inaugural message of Ronald Reagan, California’s 33rd governor, delivered during ceremonies in the Rotunda of the State Capitol at midnight.
Just before the swearing in, the new governor turned to U.S. Senator George Murphy — a former movie song-and-dance man —
and said “Well George, here we are on the late show again.”
The new governor placed his hand on Father Serra’s bible as he was sworn in by State Supreme Court Justice Marshall F. McComb.
50th Anniversary. Opens February 20 & Closes December 4.
Help wanted, no bullwink.
No flower children need apply, they need reliable, steady workers.
"Will they let us climb the Palace of Fine Arts, dude? There are some great Honnolding ledges and edges on that dome."
Tad, I was sent home and am to return at 1:15 or they'll come arrest me.
What a pain.
I stopped off at the Courthouse Museum to speak with the director about a Particular photo and she was looking at the book about the Panama Pacific Expo.
There are several vintage Yosemite images in it.
I asked her did she get it from the library...it's an antique belonging to Mrs. Cunningham, wife of Big Jim who pretty much runs the place because he's Board of Directors and major contributor and his family's owned the Cunningham Ranch since around 1855 when Merced County divorced Mariposa County. It'a right on the borderline, like the old Fremont house at the former town of Union out past LeGrand.
The museum is sponsoring an exhibit on the exposition sometime this year...Double whammy-Double whammy.
100 years ago the world gathered in San Francisco and they built the Treasure Island in a place R.L. STevenson knew well.
And they did come to see the exposure, using only the ferries and cable cars. And the railroads and the shipping lines.
Back before the Cool Bridges thread, Nash Bridges, and the Ina Coolbrith Circle Gang.
Some copy from the intro to this fun old booklet:
"Think of some of the glories that await you at the end of the golden trail:
An expenditure of fifty million dollars in construction.
Fifty millions more in the intrinsic value of exhibitions.
Six hundred and twenty-five acres of Palaces and gardens entrancingly beautiful.
Eleven great Exhibit Palaces crowded with objects of interest from every portion of the globe.
Spacious courts and miles on miles of ornamented avenues.
More than two hundred and fifty groups of statuary by world’s masters.
Huge mural paintings, masterpieces by the greatest artists.
A Million Dollar Auditorium in San Francisco’s new Civic Center.
An art palace, the architecture of which is more beautiful than any part of ancient Greece, and which contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of pictures ever collected and shown in one place.
Near two score Pavilions of the States and Foreign Nations vying with each other in architecture, displays and hospitality.
Sixty-five acres of amusement concessions, several of which cost $250,000 to build.
An Aviation Field for the contest of the air and athletic sports.
A Drill Ground, where ten thousand troops may drill at one time.
A Livestock Exhibit embracing the entire world’s best birds and animals.
An electrical illumination at night absolutely unique and unequaled."
I want a copy, or to at least permission to scan the pages. I guess I had better call Big Jim.
