Well, Gignac certainly came closer to scoring than Giroud. Payet was not a factor and the
whole team, Sisoko excepted, looked lethargic. Portugal's extra day off had to have mattered.

Just watched the replay of Gignac's miss a couple of times. Griezman was perfectly placed
but he was totally flat-footed and unable to react to the rebound. Lloris also looked to be
caught flat-footed by Eder.

Well, the Brasilian men's team finally showed up at the olympiad
tonight. 4-0 (no, Neymar didn't score), so they play Columbia
in one of the quarterfinals on Saturday.

wrt Hope and the US women's soccer team. Ouch.
I had little use for Hope way back when she dissed Briana Scurry, but now days: I think she's mostly really really good and always entertaining, i.e. the US's Mourinho.
You know when some outsider non-climber comes on Supertopo and proposes some study or piece of gear about which we all (1) wince and then (2) rip him(almost always) a new one? I'm not much of a soccer aficionado, so here's my version or proposing something I don't enough about.
We all agree that resorting to penalty kicks totally sucks, right? I have two alternatives.
(1) start taking a player off each team every 5 or 10 minutes -> more scoring -> greater likelihood that the score won't be equal. Also, it removes the incentive for the weaker team to play for penalties.
or
(2) drop the offsides rule. Same rationale as (1), and I so just want to see what happens.

Oh boy my own private thread.
I thought the Columbia/Brazil Olympic game was one of the better ones I've seen in a while. I'm not sure I was rooting for the winner. What Steve said above.
I didn't watch any of the Premier League action today.

The first half was a foul affair!
The better team won.
It'll be interesting to see what happens in the semis!

Championship of the MLS Eastern Division being played in Montreal - but wait, the penalty box is 2 yards too small!, and has to be remeasured, and repainted, while the 61,000 fans wait in the 30 degree (F) evening. D'oh!
Damn Canadians and their metric system :-) I blame Trump!

I thought the Seattle/Rapids game was quite good, although there were two near misses by the Sounders (Alonso and Lodeiro) that I wish to heck had gone in. Arg. It's going to be tense back in Colorado. It can totally go either way, IMESHO. I guess some of you have to root for the Rapids, but NOT ME!
Go Canada, except against the Sounders.

Well, well, well. Paris-St.Germaine decimated Barcelona in the first of their quaterfinal match 4-0, led by two beautiful goals by Argentinian
Angel Di Maria.
I weep for Barca, who will not overcome this time. . .
