People who talk about wanting more freedom have no clue about the individual freedoms they are losing by supporting political groups that favor corporate freedoms.
As long as there are other people than our own selves on this planet, our actions have interconnected consequences, and there is a linkage between freedom and responsibility. When we give freedoms to corporations that do not exercise responsibility, then the logical civilized solution is regulation. Regulations exist to protect us from corporations, which by their very charter exist to make profits, with lesser if any regard for ensuring humans can breath oxygen, have clean water, have unpoisoned food, have just compensation and see the fruits of their labor, etc.
This is the legal apparatus by which rich people can aggregate more wealth, providing a degree of legal and moral insulation to not have to see the distasteful things done to acquire more wealth. It provides plausible deniability, ignorance is bliss. Thus the plunderers can kick in the teeth and steal bread from starving kids without even requiring the fortitude to look them in the eye and acknowledge that it is happening. It is sort of like the evolution of food, from seeing an animal die in service of our sustenance, to just thinking of meat that magically appears in plastic wrap in a grocery store. Keep the ugliness tucked away to avoid the unpleasant feelings of guilt.
And the only way this system goes on in a democratic society, is because bobble-headed regurgitators of political platforms spout "don't take away my freedoms" all the while contributing to the loss of freedoms they are too ignorant to recognize they are losing.
For the record: I am not at all anti-capitalist or anti-corporation. I believe that capitalism is a great system to promote efficiency, and corporations are a beautiful way to organize toward that end. That being, efficiency and profitability should not be the pinnacles of human existence, and we as a society with a government should make corporate and capitalist efficiencies subordinate to our greater needs like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness- to the extent that our pursuits do not infringe on the rights of others in the little and the big picture.
Alright, I'm going to back away from the keyboard and go fix a flat tire before I give myself a hernia or detached retina getting all amped up on the war of ideas.

I get it now, freedom is not how I feel, it is how Jody feels for me. Need a What Is Freedom Thread.

Freedom is in the eye of the beholder. I am sure part of your beef is with guns. The states strict gun laws make me feel safer and therefore more free. Lots of other examples I can think of.
They say the pen is mightier than the sword--right? Oh the laws you will surely support in the days ahead.

Besides, I feel safer when the people around me have guns. And The Bill of Rights says my feelings matter more than yours. Sorry.

Lituya? Per your remark???
Besides, I feel safer when the people around me have guns.
I'm good with guns, per my various posts on the subject.
I am surprised that you asset that you trust other people with guns.
I don't, & if you are a true conservative, you would not trust other people with guns either.
Remember! The conservative slogan!
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get me!

Fritz, I don't long for a Hobbesian world. But I do feel safer here in Washington State where concealed carry means the bad guy has to ask himself whether he is, in fact, stalking sheep.
Re your love of the .357, I agree. In a world where only one handgun were allowed, I would keep my 4-inch S&W 586 above all. (My long gun would be my Winchester 94 .30-.30 lever.) Fortunately, I don't have to limit my choices in such a way.
BTW, you should keep your finger out of the trigger guard--and your hammer down. ;-)

And the "lax" gun laws in those states played a part in the officer's deaths how?
Murder rate is higher in Texas than NY or CA. Think about it Jody, more guns = more death. The common denominator across the country is availability. Before you start spewing about Chicago, the high murder rate occurs in the inner city where there are lots of guns because it is a short drive to Indiana where guns are easily obtained. Like it or not, gun regulation in CA has worked very well.

It's damn-hard to make a revolver shoot if you don't have a finger on the trigger.

I'd like to see a version of that where they say it while working out on their Total Gyms. Now that might be funny. We are in the 5:00 shadow phase of impending socialism.
