Bison and elk share winter ranges in Greater Yellowstone--these are in the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming. Both can carry brucellosis, a threat to cattle. But elk are prized as game, whereas thousands of Yellowstone bison have been slaughtered in Montana because some consider them a menace.

Among the obstacles to allowing Yellowstone bison to migrate freely in and out of the park, as they would do naturally, is that some exhibit evidence of exposure to brucellosis, a bacterial disease that can cause pregnant cows to abort their calves. Cattle ranchers in Montana worry that their own herds, now disease free, could become infected if they mixed with Yellowstone bison on public grazing lands. The irony is that bison originally contracted brucellosis from domestic cattle--but in the past 30 years there have been no documented cases of Yellowstone bison directly transmitting the disease back to livestock.
After decades of conflict ove the issue, Bovernor Steve BULLOCK announced in December that Montana would allow about 600 bison to migrate out of the park onto public lands--and that some 200 would be able to remain there year-round. In the meantime state and federal agencies have been reducing Yellowstone bison numbers by consigning some to slaughter. Native Americans are allowed to hunt bison just outside of the park, and some bison that tested negative for burcellosis were shipped to the Fort Peck Reservation in northern Montana, where tribal officials are working, under established testing protocols, toward re-creating a wild herd.
Unlike bison, elk are allowed to migrate freely, despite the fact that they also carry brucellosis. That's because big game hunting in nearby states is big business.

Did you know Clean Dan?
Whenever I was In Boulder I met a bunch of climbers
while staying at Clean Dan's house in the hills outside of Boulder
I think I told you ? . . . . .Dan wanted me to wear a weight vest to do Denver
high-rise window work.
(haha my auto correct spelling work as dork!)
Any way what is the sad tale? What happened to Dan?
He was my western base camp & ever-ready hook-up for a dozen years at least.

By the way you don't get much more local than Dennis Horning. Born and raised here and probably put in more routes in the area than all the rest of us combined on this forum. Take a look at the Piana guibook to the Needles he "is" the whole back half of the book then when your done with that look at the tower guidebook and I bet he put more in there than most of you have climbed there.
We spent a few days last year repeating a bunch of his old routes in the Needles backcountry and between 6-8 of us I don't think one bolt was clipped the whole time, and that includes on top of several very hairball spires that would have normally have bolted rapel routes but he used Needles style instead. This does not mean I agree with every position he takes, but for those of you that think he is some yahoo that does not know what he is talking about and just spouting off you are wrong.

Actress agrees to pay $1,000 for carving on red rock wall
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Actress Vanessa Hudgens has paid $1,000 in restitution for carving a heart into a red rock wall during a trip to Sedona, Arizona.
Hudgens posted a photo of the carving bearing the names "Vanessa" and "Austin" on her Instagram page around Valentine's Day, along with other photos of the couple amid towering red rocks that draw throngs of tourists to northern Arizona.
The payment resolves a citation issued to Hudgens on a misdemeanor count of damaging a natural feature on U.S. Forest Service land. The money was used by a volunteer group called Friends of the Forest to restore the rock wall, which typically is done by scrubbing or sanding the rock.
A federal magistrate in Flagstaff approved the agreement April 19, but it was not made public. The Associated Press obtained a statement of probable cause and the agreement resolving the citation from the federal judiciary under a records request.
A publicist for Hudgens did not immediately respond to a message left Friday. Hudgens is best known for her role as Gabriella Montez in the "High School Musical" TV-movie franchise.
Hudgens admitted to using a rock to scratch the names inside the heart and gave authorities information on where to find it. Volunteers and Forest Service employees found the 1-by-1-foot heart matching the description around Feb. 23 on a geologic formation known as Bell Rock.
Forest officials rarely find out who is responsible for vandalizing rock walls, but Hudgens celebrity status played a huge role, Coconino National Forest Service spokesman Brady Smith said.
Hudgens' followers on Instagram alerted the media, and authorities took note of the news coverage. The photo of the carving quickly was removed from her page.
"She was caught in the act because she publicized it and she's famous," Smith said. "I'm sure there are others who are not famous and publicized it and we've never known."
Smith said carvings destroy the natural beauty of the area and create the perception among the public that it's OK to deface rock walls. Damaging a natural feature is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Jennifer Young, president of Friends of the Forest said about 10 to 15 volunteers responding to reports of vandalism set out in the Red Rock Ranger District every other week in search of reported graffiti and use wire brushes, sandpaper and a specialized drill to clean it up.
"Unfortunately, there's a lot that happens," she said.

I was a guest at the Cabin in the Woods a place , called the Hemlocks or Birches or some such.
The front porch, the whole cabin is vivid, but the room with the books, ? The book ?
I always thought it was a Ursala K LeGwyn story, I can only just barley recall
A Down's Syndrome non verbal telepathic infant making an old farm truck work?
All better written 1st time around . . .
Then so bs about planting trees in the rain. Being in love fat & insane. . .
The kids can't remember to log out of the tablet so it in turn locks me out.

I mean, it's what it's, right?

I remember that it was at a beach in far northern California and there was a lighthouse that had been working in the war but now was junky and vandalized by salt.
The only trees were way in the hell up on top of the ridges that sprung right out of the black sand beaches, really green, and super black. And steep enough to get a goat's wanger wanging.
As for the lighthouse, there was that, and it wasn't much, but there were barracks, too, littered with cots overturned by vandalizing beach marauders who probably never read a book in their lives.
And there were books all over the place! There were three large bookcases knocked over and the contents left to decay in the vandalizing salt air.
This may or may not have been a dream. It may or may not be memories of a real event or several events.
It's likely a fabrication based loosely on lies, innuendo, and tissue-of-lies, which is much more per square inch than regular lies. Tissue-of-lies makes things look almost perfect, like a good facelift.
Now it's only 1:53 a.m. here, also, not 4:00 a.m. But your time may vary based on location, location, location.
