1. According to Royal Robbins, he wrote an early guide to Joshua Tree in appr. 1958. No copies are know to have survived.

2. John Wolfe published a small paperback guide in 1970 (80pp) which had the same cover art as the one above. It was orange and had less than 100 routes. According to Woody Stark and others, it was to be a collaborative effort and they provided information. Ultimately, Wolfe ended up publishing it on his own.

3. Wolfe reprinted the 1970 guide in 1973 and it looks almost identical, but has the 1973 date and a correction to Damper (rating changed from 5.6 to 5.9).

4. Wolfe produces Orange Vinyl cover guide with Bob Dominick in 1976.

5. A limited Hardback edition of this guide (with dust jacket) was also printed.

6. Wolfe and Dominick update again in 1978, with Red Vinyl cover. This went through 3 different printings (all marked as such). A limited 4th Blue vinyl cover edition was also produced.

7. A Supplement to the 1976 guide was produced that effectively turned the Orange 1976 guide into a 1978 guide -- these guides had removable pages with a screw-post binding. As a result, very few complete 1976 guides remain intact.

Mine is the orange book, first printing of the 2nd edition, December 1976 (with map;-)) and an old price tag inside that says 12.50

I purchased it from an online used book dealer, which to them was just another book. Condition is grade A

'70 is paperback while the '76 was the vinyl cover with post binding (but still orange).

Sandbag city!

Interesting to note that the Old Woman was referred to as "North Fourth" as well.

I still remember like it was yesterday standing on the last bong I had that would fit, contemplating the next half of the climb and no more gear.

Fortunately it's a bit easier in stiff klettershuh than modern footwear.

CHECK OUT THESE "DOPE" SHIRTS FOR AUCTION

Dope Miller Equipment, purveyors of trick haul bags, chalk, Moses Ent. big wall equip., shirts and rental big wall packages has agreed to contribute to the TG Fund effort. They have a selection of cool on topic shirts which they have offered to auction for the Fund. Check them out and make an offer.

We will have 5 each in any size of the Midnight Lightning and the El Cap models as seen below for a total of 10 shirts.

Yes they actually rent complete big wall equipment packages. That means you can fly from anywhere in the world with a reasonable luggage load, rent the package and send. You'll have to deal with the "snail eye" on your own!
I forgot to say how reasonably priced this is. Dude, there is even a waste disposal system. Very green.

Thanks to Jeff Vargen for hooking this up.

You can e-mail me, DE, at devansbike@earthlink.net with bids or questions.

Are you offering it to support Dave's effort or just swinging it around?

Hey Johntp, great bid but it looks like Fogarty has you beat (on time) with the same $200 bid. Bump it!

Zip, you're still willing to donate the map? If so, get with me about sending it so I can put it in with the guide.

I was going to try to post this to the TG appreciation thread. Maybe some politics will give this thread some legs, and help raise the rabble. What do you get when you mix a 5 y.o. and Faux news? Personally, I think the kid (all kids) deserve some good training.

"I heard that the roof was completed a while ago, are you guys working to pay off his mortgage now?"

Ah no. For the time being we're trying to pay for the electrical I'm doing so there will still be a house that needs a roof. SandSnow & I have rebuilt the main panel and took out some really bad stuff.

Early in the week Todd called me and said he had no hot water. I went over and check the wiring into the water heater and it's a good thing I did. It was a cluster f*#k that had been arc faulting and could have easily lead to a fire. Whoever installed it should either be a slow motion serial arsonist, or just not play with electricity. It was bad. Fixed now, but there is a ton more to do.

All the light switches and receptacles in the house need to be replaced.

And, somebody needs to step up and help out with some of the plumbing. I can help out with the Swamp Coolers that all need a rehab, but there are some other issues that need to be addressed.

Anyone else care to step up?
