As to why the US lags behind the best teams in the world in soccer perhaps why I just joined SuperTopo can shed some light on that subject.
I have a son that has played club soccer for about 5 years. The coaching has been great and my son has really loved it. However, now that he’s in middle school so many great players have left his soccer team to focus on other sports. My son, despite my attempts to try and interest him into at least trying other sports, has committed himself to only soccer (spring and fall club team, winter indoor team and summer camps) but he’s really bummed out about so many friends leaving the team it's to the point he wants to try a new sport… Rock Climbing. I told him he’s committed to the club season for the spring but this summer we found a rock climbing gym he really wants to join. Some of my searches to learn more about rock climbing due to my son's interest is what lead me here.
It’ll be interesting to see where this leads but I’m convinced that many of the best US soccer players are still playing other sports. Most are probably playing football and basketball but some of them might just be rock climbing!

Pretty sure you're right about that. Imagine Marshawn Lynch as a number 7 or number 10, or Kobe as CB.
Keep your son playing club. My son started playing club soccer at U8 (Real SoCal and Ventura County Fusion). He graduates from high school this year but, he would never have made his high school team had he not played club. Most high school sports are like that these days and are very competitive for boys and girls teams.
Climbing as an interscholastic sport? Why not? My high school had a surf team, Mammoth HS has a ski/snowboard team. Why not climbing?

I saw an interesting movie recently: The Two Escobars from in the ESPN 30-30 series. It a documentary that covers the interaction between Columbian soccer and the drug cartels, focussing on Pablo Escobar (cartel leader) and Andres Escobar beloved Columbian national team player. There is good soccer, a wrenching story and coverage of Columbia's drug and national battles given in full brutal grimness.

And US U-23 men fail to qualify for Olympics for the second time in a row. That's bad.
I really think US soccer is going downhill. Too many fathers coaching youth soccer who
not only have no business doing so but actually do harm.
Well, that and the fact that 3 USA players decided to kick their opponents and two got red cards for it.
A third, Parker, should have been red carded for first kicking, then stomping on his mark, but only got cautioned for it.
Perhaps the issue is that USA referees should be issuing more VC multi game suspensions and USA u23 coaches should be weeding out players who act like asses.

Yes, DeJong, one of the dirtiest ever. He was at his best at the 2010
cup, when Spain beat the Netherlands--but he was never ejected. . .
Ah, but look at Leicester City!!! Jamie Vardy with another brace of
goals on Sunday!!!!

Ronaldo beat Wolfsburg pretty much by himself, with a hat trick.
Man City advances too. . .

Wolfsburg haha. I think the Berlin Wall would have done better than that "wall".
The first goal was a joke defensively too, but you gotta give Ronaldo credit.
Poor Zlatan...

RIP Barcelona. Sorry Steve, but happy they are out. Atletico looked good.
Do you know what Real, Atletico, and Bayern have in common?
They all want to draw Man City on Friday.

Yeah I hope the Bavarian's can do it, but Real and Atletico are both more than capable of topping them. Bayern's d is more than suspect.
Liverpool vs. Dortmund today should be good.

My guess he's preoccupied with a potential 20 year sentence for tax evasion since he and dad popped up on the Panama papers list.

All hail Leicester!
Today's BBC:
Explaining the Leicester City story to Americans
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36028733
"Bookmakers' odds on them winning the Premier League were 5,000 to one last summer"
"Now Ranieri is a folk hero in the East Midlands and there's even talk of a knighthood from the Queen.
There is also an English king's hand in their success, if you believe in superstition. Ever since Richard III's body was dug up from a car park in Leicester and restored to the city's cathedral a year ago, their fortunes have turned around."

What about Suarez midweek? 4 goals and 3 assists.
Besides his couple biting attacks, the guy plays some of the best futbol.
