Happiegrrrl2,

When you assume, for the moment, the opposite is correct (i.e., everything in the news about Trump and Russians is fake) and you get only contradictions and absurd conclusions, then you know that the opposite is NOT correct(i.e. the Trump and Russian news stories are true). This is known as reductio ad absurdum, and was known to the ancient Greeks as a valid way to determine the truth (they used the technique in about 400 B.C. to prove that the square-root of 2 is an irrational number).

Hannity, Lou Dobbs, Fox News, InfoWars, the White House Press Office, and an ever-shrinking handful of Republicans in Congress, are acting like a housewife who knowingly denies that her husband is raping their young daughter.

It is truly disgusting to see that sort of dysfunctional, co-dependent denial of reality being normalized in the news cycle, and on Capitol Hill. Trump is an abusive POSPOTUS, and his co-dependent apologists enable him.

Luckily, laws exist that transcend the co-dependent denials, and allow prosecution of criminals to take place, based on facts. America is a nation of laws and facts, and the facts will show what the truth is, and the laws will be applied to those who have broken them. The housewife can deny the existence of forensic evidence, but at the end of the day, justice will prevail.

And, the same is true of a B.S.C. moron like Sean Hannity. He can blather as much denial nonsense as he wants, and call the moon green cheese, but at the end of the day, people have, as a FACT, been indicted and convicted and sentenced and jailed as part of the Russia investigation. The investigation, as a FACT, is expanding in scope, not contracting, winding down, or coming to an end. It is a FACT that Trump's campaign manager has been indicted in two different courts (Virginia and Federal) and is now the focus of investigations about Russians illegally financing the campaign.

Jared Kushner would not have hired the most expensive Washington D.C. attorney if he was innocent. Trump would not be tweeting NO COLLUSION every few days if he was innocent.

This isn't rocket science. Reality is a democratic process. Trump's voter base is eroding, and even without that happening, Trump is going to lose his battle with reality. And, it will probably be ugly and tragic.

My intuition tells me that Mueller will be gunning for the big game very soon.

Hannity's allegation that the investigation should be stopped now, because he hasn't seen sufficient evidence of collusion, is absurd. Only a stupid prosecutor would reveal his case and his evidence to the press before he is able to properly use it to convict a criminal.

What I am expecting is that Trump's loyal apologists will be sued, personally and professionally, for their roles in the cover-up. It may be difficult to prove that Hannity, et al, knowingly deceived the public to inflict harm, but I can imagine a gigantic class-action lawsuit that would give them a taste of what they really deserve. Free speech that intentionally and directly leads to the injury of others, like causing a bone-crushing stampede in a stadium, is an actionable tort.

Grasshoppa, do you not see the butterfly?

No, master. All I see a blob of dried gook hanging from a branch.

But, Grasshoppa, do you not see, in your mind, the butterfly that will soon come out of the cocoon?

No, master. There is no butterfly. There will never be a butterfly. That is fake news. I must stomp on the blob right now.

Time for you to leave.

Here is some Fake News that is satire:

TRUMP TOWER CATCHES FIRE APRIL 7, 2018

Trump sent some goons to start a fire at his Trump Tower office, and burn up all the evidence of Russian collusion.

Instead, the goons accidentally set fire to a secret apartment that Trump kept on the 50th floor of the building. The goons got the wrong key, from the wrong attorney, went into the wrong room, and didn't notice that the movie cameras, round bed, mirrored ceilings, dungeon chains, hot tub, and intravenous erectile-dysfunction medicine machine were not standard office decor. The goons tossed their Molotov cocktails, and fled the building before the alarm sounded.

The Russian collusion evidence the goons were attempting to destroy was in Trump's 26th floor office, and was not affected by the fire.

However, Trump's private Sala Dorata di Amore - his golden pleasure palace - was a total loss with damage estimated to be well in excess of $10 million.

Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller will be assembling a task force to investigate the suspicious incident.

This: "Keep your gun handy, and every time you see one, you shoot one."

Did Ted Nugent really say that?

I don't think that statement is specific enough to warrant domestic terrorism charges, but a Texas Ranger should have a talk with him. Even better, a psychiatric evaluation might lead to his being stripped of his guns. Second Amendment rights don't exist for mentally ill people, especially if they threaten other people with their guns.

Nugent doesn't do drugs or alcohol, so it must the syphilis from his self-celebrated sex addiction that has gone to his head.

I just can't comprehend how someone can be so completely guilty, but they try and pretend that they are innocent all the while trying to be the President...

The psychological somersaults that must be going on in his brain

Any normal person would know that sooner or later their wall of lies will come falling down

My opinion of Trump.
He is one of the most despicable humans on earth that just bullied and lied his way to the top of the NY mobsters, and then deluded himself enough that he could lie his way to become the President, and the idiot Republicans lapped up the con like it was milk and honey

The Republican voters are once again the true cause of our situation, they would vote in Satan if they could. They are all Authoritarian followers that will do what ever their over lords dupe them into believing.

A Neuroscientist Explains What Could Be Wrong with Trump Supporters’ Brains

https://www.alternet.org/right-wing/neuroscientist-explains-what-could-be-wrong-trump-supporters-brains

The Dunning-Kruger Effect:

Some believe that many of those who support Donald Trump do so because of ignorance — basically they are under-informed or misinformed about the issues at hand. When Trump tells them that crime is skyrocketing in the United States, or that the economy is the worst it’s ever been, they simply take his word for it.

The seemingly obvious solution would be to try to reach those people through political ads, expert opinions, and logical arguments that educate with facts. Except none of those things seem to be swaying any Trump supporters from his side, despite great efforts to deliver this information to them directly.

The Dunning-Kruger effect explains that the problem isn’t just that they are misinformed; it’s that they are completely unaware that they are misinformed. This creates a double burden.

Studies have shown that people who lack expertise in some area of knowledge often have a cognitive bias that prevents them from realizing that they lack expertise. As psychologist David Dunning puts it in an op-ed for Politico, “The knowledge and intelligence that are required to be good at a task are often the same qualities needed to recognize that one is not good at that task — and if one lacks such knowledge and intelligence, one remains ignorant that one is not good at the task. This includes political judgment.” Essentially, they’re not smart enough to realize they’re dumb.

And if one is under the illusion that they have sufficient or even superior knowledge, then they have no reason to defer to anyone else’s judgment. This helps explain why even nonpartisan experts — like military generals and Independent former Mayor of New York/billionaire CEO Mayor of New York/billionaire CEO Michael Bloomberg — as well as some respected Republican politicians, don’t seem to be able to say anything that can change the minds of loyal Trump followers.

Out of immense frustration, some of us may feel the urge to shake a Trump supporter and say, “Hey! Don’t you realize that he’s an idiot?!” No. They don’t. That may be hard to fathom, but that’s the nature of the Dunning-Kruger effect — one’s ignorance is completely invisible to them.

apparently Trump suffers Dunning-Kruger Effect, how can anyone so uniformed think he is the best person to make decisions??

I don't like Trump. Hope he's a one term pres.

OK, Trump's a pig.

Who are you thinking should run against President Trump in the next election?

From the GOP, I'd like to see Kasich, Huntsman or Sasse step up. If Nikki Haley ran, I'd campaign for her, even though she's got a nasty Trump taint to overcome.

Terror Management Theory

A well-supported theory from social psychology, called Terror Management Theory, explains why Trump’s fear mongering is doubly effective.

The theory is based on the fact that humans have a unique awareness of their own mortality. The inevitably of one’s death creates existential terror and anxiety that is always residing below the surface. In order to manage this terror, humans adopt cultural worldviews — like religions, political ideologies, and national identities — that act as a buffer by instilling life with meaning and value.

Terror Management Theory predicts that when people are reminded of their own mortality, which happens with fear mongering, they will more strongly defend those who share their worldviews and national or ethnic identity, and act out more aggressively towards those who do not. Hundreds of studies have confirmed this hypothesis, and some have specifically shown that triggering thoughts of death tends to shift people towards the right.

Not only do death reminders increase nationalism, they influence actual voting habitsin favor of more conservative presidential candidates. And more disturbingly, in a study with American students, scientists found that making mortality salient increased support for extreme military interventions by American forces that could kill thousands of civilians overseas. Interestingly, the effect was present only in conservatives, which can likely be attributed to their heightened fear response.

By constantly emphasizing existential threat, Trump creates a psychological condition that makes the brain respond positively rather than negatively to bigoted statements and divisive rhetoric. Liberals and Independents who have been puzzled over why Trump hasn’t lost supporters after such highly offensive comments need look no further than Terror Management Theory.

4.High Attentional Engagement

According to a recent study that monitored brain activity while participants watched 40 minutes of political ads and debate clips from the presidential candidates, Donald Trump is unique in his ability to keep the brain engaged. While Hillary Clinton could only hold attention for so long, Trump kept both attention and emotional arousal high throughout the viewing session. This pattern of activity was seen even when Trump made remarks that individuals didn’t necessarily agree with. His showmanship and simple messages clearly resonate at a visceral level.

Essentially, the loyalty of Trump supporters may in part be explained by America’s addiction with entertainment and reality TV. To some, it doesn’t matter what Trump actually says because he’s so amusing to watch. With Donald, you are always left wondering what outrageous thing he is going to say or do next. He keeps us on the edge of our seat, and for that reason, some Trump supporters will forgive anything he says. They are happy as long as they are kept entertained.

Of course these explanations do not apply to all Trump supporters. In fact, some are likely intelligent people who know better, but are supporting Trump to be rebellious or to introduce chaos into the system. They may have such distaste for the establishment and Hillary Clinton that their vote for Trump was a symbolic middle finger directed at Washington.

So what can we do to potentially change the minds of Trump loyalists before voting in 2020? As a cognitive neuroscientist, it grieves me to say that there may be nothing we can do. The overwhelming majority of these people may be beyond reach, at least in the short term. The best we can do is to motivate everyone else to get out to the booths and check the box that doesn’t belong to a narcissistic nationalist who has the potential to damage the nation beyond repair.

“The seemingly obvious solution ..”

Didn’t work. Maybe the problem is more in its seemingly obviousness than in its not working.

“it’s that they’re completely unaware that they are misinformed.”
“And even if one is under the illusion that they have sufficient or even superior knowledge, then they have no reason to defer to anyone else’s judgment.”

Good points, and probably useful advice for the geniuses on the left to whom it was seemingly obvious that I wouldn’t get elected, or to whom it was seemingly obvious that they were the geniuses who understood how to stop stoopid ole me from getting myself elected.

Better luck next time!

Me, I’m a super genius, so Dunning-Kruger tells me that I’m even righter than I think I am. Ok, if you say so. Who am I to argue with science?

Edward,

Don't despair, Craig Fry likes to pull half-baked nonsense out of the social sciences that he reads on the internet. He seems particularly fascinated with outdated and/or debunked cognitive bias measures that, not-so-ironically, fit his personal worldview. He attacks people--and then cries like a little boy when someone points out his intellectual shortcomings. Surrounded by like-minded fools here, no doubt he has come to believe he is the norm. Still, he is a particularly dark and curious case.
