He put political theater on steroids.
Just so we're clear: you think the guy who literally has white supremacist groups holding fund raisers for him and who they credit for maintstreaming many of their beliefs is the Kool-aide antidote?
Trump is a charlatan. He will literally say whatever it takes for him to appear to be the best. If that includes things like "politicians do whatever I want because I spend so much money on them" then he will. If he has to then turn around the next day and say the opposite he will. The mockery is that Americans are so happy to hear him "say what we all are thinking" that they happily overlook these absurd contradictions.
Jimmy Carter was crucified for daring to say that America had seen better days and had some hard work ahead of it to overcome it's problems. Trump and most of the others that share the stage with him can't badmouth America enough and Republicans (or a certain segment of them) can't get enough.
Trump is a con man. You are his marks.

That's how it has always been. The idea of a primary is a modern invention. Before that, candidates were picked in smoke filled rooms and the only debates were between the party nominees. I'm not saying there couldn't or shouldn't be a better way, just that you seem to be pining for an idea of democracy that has never existed.

"Con man" is exactly what Trump is.
People who have dealt with him say that he is highly effective at reading people, divining what they want to hear, and then saying it. He adapts and molds his BS to suit whomever is listening. He is, at his core, a salesman. He got his start at his daddy's real estate office, drooling lies into a telephone.
Many people, lenders, investors, would-be condo buyers, have learned the hard way about coming too close to the open maw of the ravenous cannibal Trump.
He readily admits (Playboy interview) that he will squeeze as hard as he can in a deal, backing off "just before the other guy's head explodes". He gloats about his ability to always get more, with the other guy getting less.

He repeatedly lies about his misdeeds, either through blanket denials, or by twisting the facts to falsely depict his actions as harmless, ethical or justified.
Trump is a walking, talking nosology of personality dysfunction.
They should seal him up in a glass box at the Columbia Medical School psychiatry department, so that he can be studied without further infecting society.

I only wish it was performance art. The guy really scares me, remember there was a failed austrian artist who took over Germany with similar poll numbers, and Trump is a bloviating demagogue with a similar message.
