When I came out of the pub, having seen some baseball, I trucked into the Coffee Bandits to listen to the dozen or so bluegrassians playing a tune I did not recognize.

I went up to John, keeping time like a regular MisterE on a cool drum he owns, and asked him the name of the tune. He said, "I Can Never Remember."

Well, he didn't convince me, so I asked a gent playing a Gibson when they had done, and he said it was Big Sciota.

So without further ado, for Big Mike & Sandra, for Andy & nita, for SC Seagoat & Ferretlegger, for Khanom & Vicki, for BooDawg & Lisa, for Michael & Kali, a real lovely song, if not 'zackly a love song.

MooseDrool, got something for ya, pally.

A super-looking slab of exquisite slate, I'll bet, on this religious edifice.

It was destroyed in the war, however, no doubt about it.

The younger Canaletto preferred Warsaw to Venice, where his uncle had lived and worked.

This book that I found years back just surfaced today, and it's titled Canaletto: Malarz Warsawy.

It is written in Polish, however. It's coming your way, sooner or later. :0)

From Central Europe to Central California, from the banks of the Vistula to the shore of Lake Don Pedro on the Tuolumne, The Flames have some of it, but not yet all of it.

We are full of much of it and contented to be so.

Short for Modesto. Mr. Ralston, RR exec, would not let them use his name for their new town on the new railroad, the Central Pacific, so they thought his modesty deserved remembering, and 'modesto' is the result.

I should take a gaze at Chico next, but there'll be time. I got the Redding pix on T Hocking's thread, so maybe...Mound HOuse?

We two did all of our routes in California.

Lover's Leap, Arches, MCR, HCR, Lyell, Starr King, Box Canyon, Snake Dike, YPB, Pinnacles, Winchell, Tahquitz.

We never thought of Borneo, however, as a place we'd LIKE to go.

Now I would have started my day feeling up, not high just happy to breath

Then Synnot and crew with pup rope gun in Borneo

Damn we old guys missed out, dysentery and malaria aside,

I would have been an asset on that sort of climb

Now my day at 8am is in deed, mundane - take out the garbage 'afore the truck comes by,

do the washing up, laundry day & dishes and pans

that video swirling in my head

I soloed and climbed out of my Geo-zone

I missed the boat thrice, may be more,

Backing wrong horses,

going to Ecuador.

C King, no relation to T Hocking, is a very shy individual and asked me to post this for him.

He claims to have a significant FA in the area.

One little-known but important aspect of King's college background was his close association with a group of artists and scientists who embraced the ideas of the English art philosopher John Ruskin. King remained deeply passionate about art all of his life. His art group at Yale, the Society for the Advancement of Truth in Art, was nick-named 'the American Pre-Raphaelites', after their contemporaries in England, the English Pre-Raphaelite painters. The basic philosophy was to return to simplicity and practicality in art.

In 1863, as a young man, King made his first ascent of a western peak; it was Mount Lassen. Scrambling to the top with other members of the California Geological Survey, they beheld the incredible panorama of most of northern California, including Mount Shasta bold and bright to the north. King is recorded as having said, "What would Ruskin have said if he had seen this!".--Wikipedia

Ruskin was known for his admiration of ‘the sublime.’ Of which Wilkins writes:

“A raw wind howled across the mountain [Lassen] during their initial ascent on September 26, probably the first time the peak had ever been climbed. King reached the topmost shaft only to be blown back by the gale. Clouds obscured the landscape below....[They were unable to use their instruments, and so had to return another day]....But Mount Shasta, seventy-five miles away, loomed from the mists, sharp and majestic—the peak which had drawn King like a magnet. He shouted to Brewer above the wailing of the wind: “What would Ruskin have said if he had seen this!”

“A fierce snow squall delayed a second ascent until September 29. They began the climb by the light of the moon, an hour after midnight. King forged ahead, and again he was the first to reach the highest needle. “Here,
he wrote, "I wrapped my blanket round me and looked out over the moonlit distance.” It was a world of utter silence till Brewer clattered on to the nearest ledge. “

He's a nice enough guy, just really, really shy.

"Helplessly Hoping"

Helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit he runs
Wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of goodbye

Wordlessly watching he waits by the window and wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams he worries
Did he hear a good-bye?
Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other

Stand by the stairway you'll see something certain to tell you
Confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying it's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other
