yo tardaddy, you can remove those question marks by eppi's name. i had to shame him into it and promise to let him burn me off on everything, but he's gonna meet us at the warm-up boulders at 10 sharp. plus i got a call from the verm last night. he'd be drivin' in for sure, but he's got some hottie meetin' him at the beanfest this weekend. priorities, priorities....

I land at 3:10 on Friday. Should I head to Woodson to check out
the warmup area, or just be a disoriented tourist, or what?

if everyone is rollin in friday and heading up to the north county, you might want to converge on the new stone brewery in escondido. i hear the menu is a wee bit strange and kinda pricey, but the beer selection (stone and others) is awesome.

Eppi (Greg),
I sure wish I could have made it just to smile and shake your hand again for it's been a while now. I don't know why but I was humbled by your demeanor ever since I met you at Santee Boulders at the 20 Point Problem back in the early eighties. I remember walking down Woodson's road in the near dark trying to convince you why getting married was okay for a "climber/photographer" in your shoes and hearing your "but's" and "what if's" in your defense. I'll be there, though, and will do, I Hear My Train, Driving South, Left Long's Crack, Jaw's, California night and Mother Superior with you all by memory and in spirit as well. I hope to see many pictures when I get back from the Philippines. You all take care and be safe!

Sounds like the new Stone Brewery might be the ticket...
Drink late Friday, and go for the pre-dawn start on Saturday. Sunrise is scheduled for 6:05 AM PDT on Saturday. With a headlamp, one could easily add an extra hour. That would give you almost six hours to warm-up and tick-off all the plums well before all us disoriented tourists make the scene.

you could, and you'll likely find the meeting place, but that's about as far as you'll get. i.e. if you don't know the place mostly (with a few notable exceptions like the TV screen, and robbins crack) you'll just thrash around in the bushes getting lost.
Edited to say that the porter is getting his eyeballs zapped tomorrow, so I likely have to be close to home on Friday, otherwise I'd offer up a preview

Well, Rats, the ether stole my snappy comeback to Robs, and I'll
never be able to pull it off again.
If I wanted to summit and watch the sunset or something, is there
a closing time for the mountain?
Are things in flower there now?

I misunderstood your question. You could easily meander up the road, check out the cool rocks-the TV screen and the marshmellow tower will be obvious, for example,- and have a very pleasant afternoon.
No closing time that I know of. I've seen some cool wildlife out there over the years-grey foxes, ringtail cats, brown trantulas (although now is wrong season you mostly see them in fall, when the males are wandering around looking for chicks), bats, miscl rattlers, etc.
check out the chalk plants

Certain species are endangered, but there are lots of them at woodson. they like to grow in rocky niches. They are blooming right now.

If you land 3pm on a Friday, by the time you're on the road the 15 North could be in full gridlock mode. You might consider catching the sunset from the beach, which depending upon where you're staying avoids freeway driving.
Where are you staying Fri night?

Crotch, that's a good question, one that I've asked myself more
than twice. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the traffic heads-up.
