Just got done with the Costa Rica vs. Greece.
Unfortunately tragic for Greece... Too bad they could not find the legs to take advantage of the missing player for Costa Rica.
Massive boost for Costa Rica!!!

That is how you take pens. Not sure I've ever seen a better 5 in a row than what Costa Rica just did. Very happy to see them moving on, though this was perhaps their least impressive performance.
They might actually do a little better against the Dutch, who won't sit back as much as Greece did. Though a sub will have to deal with Robben due to the red card. Ouch.
That was a foul on Robben, though he made the most of it. Marquez was walking the line with that one and a couple others. Mexico can't complain too much, as there could have easily been one given in that challenge before half.

I couldn't watch the PKs due to the stress (WHIMP!) and not wanting either team to lose, although paradoxically I was totally rooting for los Ticos. I see Campbell made his! He and Navas deserve metals for heroically hanging in there. Heck they all do from both teams. What a show from two of the less renown teams left.
I hope my Greek friends don't read this, but I'm pretty darn happy about the result. Congratulations LittleZ!

Okay.... I am hoping we can get past Belgium, then past the winner of the Argentina-Swiss match, THEN, assuming the Netherlands goes through, we'd be playing the Dutch. It would be fun having a joint cheering section of North Americans, both sides of the Border, looking for a fitting end to Holland. Just sayin....

I was hoping to see an authentic Mexican soccer riot when I'm in Santa Ana later this week, but that's out now.

Pura Vida!
I first kicked a soccer ball as a 5 year old boy living in Costa Rica in '74 and '75. The same age my boy is now. That was a tense game. I'm really happy for them.

There seems to be alot of lapses in concentration towards the end of matches that rips your heart out - IE Mexico, Chile and USA in last few days.

ALLONS ENFANTS DE LA PATRIE!!!!!!!!!
2-1 pour Les Banlieus. (Nothing against Nigeria)
Another poor pitch but a fantastic start to this match!
Edit:
40 minutes of end to end action! Best match of the whole cup! ALLEZ!
It does seem that Giroud and Benzema are not on the same page as far
as the final touches are concerned.

Yeah, not a great game for Giroud. He and Benzema did seem better in the other games, but it didn't click today.
Assuming Germany wins, the France-Germany game should be very interesting. Two pretty well-balanced teams that both like to attack.

just now coming back down to earth.
it's been quite a time here in Costa Rica. During the penalty kicks I had to step outside to get some air and try to settle down. It was like stepping into some twilight zone - there was no one on the streets, no sound of cars or trucks, just the sound of the wind and a few birds singing in the distance. Then all hell broke loose when Keylor blocked that kick and Umaña sunk the winner. Everyone came busting out of their houses screaming and yelling, crying (my son and I among them), waving flags, hugging each other, honking horns. We hopped in the car and drove 5 minutes into town to join the celebration. It then took us two hours to drive home! The whole country just collapsed for about 3 hours. I wanted to take photos but my camera ran out of batteries after about 10 minutes. Never got the final huge crowd scenes, but who cares, we lived it.
Flip Flop, very cool that you were here once upon a time. Amazed at how we all wind up connecting. Where did you live?
Bring on the Dutch.

Germany better have learned that Lahm is a right back. Pep has tried to convert him into a center mid, but he is one of the best defenders in the world and Germany is already loaded in mid.
Neuer was spot on coming out to stop the breaks.
Algeria should be proud of their cup.
Little Z, that's way cool and something I'll never experience in this country.
