Leg day at the gym, followed by a 5 mile run. The sun was shining, it was warm, and I actually enjoyed it - that is the running part!! The weighted lunges are still not my favorite.
Perhaps we need to recalibrate the fuel intake just a hair more. Eat more, but not too much more. It is nice to have more energy. Balance was better too. That might come in handy.
Best chances for a sub 6 minute mile - run downhill!

. . . being fairly fit and climbing well can be two different things.
Absolutely true. The strain on small muscles in my arthritic shoulders keeps me away from the rock, but I am gaining bodyweight strength with pull-ups, etc., and that feels good. You do what you can. The important thing is to keep doing something.

Yesterday 30 min elliptical and 40 min walk/run with dog in Red Rocks.
Then the dreaded "deck of cards" workout with Maura. Shuffle the deck and take turns pulling cards.
Hearts = pullups (jack = 11, queen = 12, king = 13, ace = 15)
Diamonds = card value x 2 for a special ab set
Sometimes we make Diamonds = pushups x 2
Clubs = card value x 4 touches on a slightly overhanging rock wall
Spades = card value x seconds hanging on a hang board repeat x 4
For small numbers on some sets, I have a 10 and a 20lb weight vest.
It takes over an hour. I got a disproportionate number of pullups and abs while Maura got overloaded on hangs and rock wall hits.
When done, your forearms, abs, and back are pretty roasted.
Not aerobic, but fun workout that some may find valuable.

Two hour mountain bike ride. Maybe the last of the year as it's about to go nuclear oven here in the desert. Road season is upon us!

45 minute run (slow) keeping my heart rate between 145-150 max. This was my first outside run since finishing chemo. I have been going to the gym and working out on treadmill and stationary for aerobic but living in California I don't consider indoor aerobic workout my real workout (unless it's indoor soccer). My license plate is "SRW RUNS" and running has always been one of my great loves. This felt so good to do it outside. Especially with the wind whistling through my hair, err, wait, I don't really have hair yet...ok, blowing across my scalp. Susan

Most excellant, Susan. My mom ran through her chemo - many days, not all days. Those were the good days. It is a way of hanging onto normal. I still remember getting her the best card later, - "Congratulations, your hare is back". Hope to hear that from you later on. THe first step is always the hardest.
Drove for 3 hours to get to Rainier on Saturday. That should be considered a workout. Climbed quickly - until 9,100'. Dragged ass for 500' then felt great. Broke above the clouds at 9,000'. The forecast - 22 degrees with showers and 15 mph winds. Reality - a beach party at Muir with no wind at all, pass the sunblock.
Dragged the load on St. Helens for 3 hours on Sunday in variable, but not miserable weather, then rewarded myself with a fine italian dinner.
Arms today at the gym. Only got in 2 miles - and hope to get in a few more at home tonight.

OK Sully, EXACTLY where is the low rent section of where you live...except maybe on the other side of the freeway? I think maybe the area you live is "high" and "mega". LOL Susan

Delicate arch stroll. Brisk walking pace. We forgot our free solo gear but it was just what we needed on a troublesome day, in a very strange trip....

bumped up to a 50 min run this a.m. keeping heart rate no higher than 150. Weight work tonight at the gym. Boat work tomorrow. The fun never ends. Gym climbing a little bit, lingering neuropathy in my toes from chemo makes my shoes REALLY uncomfortable so I prefer to suffer through that agony by climbing outside where it is worth it. Weather is stablizing so more outside climbing. Susan

Nice, Susan. I hope the neuropathy will fade over time?
I did a nice speed session with my club last night - try it!
Sprint 100m, jog 300m, sprint 200m, jog 200m, sprint 300m, jog 100m, sprint all 400m. Rest 2 minutes and repeat. The last 400m is tough as it is done with the least rest.
Also did a load of ring rows and push ups so upper body is aching pleasantly today.
Planning on carrying sandbags up flights of stairs at lunch, with various squats/burpees/ pushups/etc. at each landing, for time. Some friends dreamed this up and invited a bunch to join in.

Ran 8 hilly miles yesterday.
Trainer earned his money today - I did not want to work out!! An hour for my legs, followed by a 4 miles run. Ate half a chicken and now downing a coffee and cookie. Some days the struggle is more mental than physical. I'll have to apologize to said trainer at next session. I am glad that I did work out. I hope some sleep will adjust today's attitude!!

Nice going on the hills, Seamstress!
I did a hilly 5K trail race this evening, in the Bronx of all places. It is a summer series and is a nice lowkey race. They give giant freshly-baked carrot cake muffins from the bakery across the street as prizes so there is incentive to run hard :) And believe me 5K is HARD! I really prefer marathon distance and longer where I am rarely out of breath with a coppery taste in the back of my throat.
I think the winner was a 15-year old who finished under 18 minutes......

5Ks are a different kind of hurt. I always liked the long distances better, too. The East has a ton of great trail races - that's how I got into climbing, entertainment after a trail race.

A 5K, like any race less than an hour if you're trained, is anaerobic. You manage oxygen debt. Training for that is different than for marathons. When I was racing, I always ran 5Ks much better than marathons. I was probably "really" a miler, but there aren't many mile races for middle-aged duffers.
And, you can actually win a 5K in NYC in over 17min these days? That is shocking.
