LEB, I totally agree with you that it's not the end of the world, not preferable at age 16, but not the end of world. But please explain to me why the Right has, and rather successfully, been against sex ed. in public schools, cuts funding for planned parenthood community clinics, preaches abstinence, etc.

Perhaps Ron can advise as to what sort of shotgun is appropriate at weddings of the kind that Palin's daughter will be having. I assume that the bride's parents should have a matching pair, but what kind will McCain have?
Presumably Dick Cheney, if he's invited and attends, will be the only man in the bridal party not permitted to carry.

So now you're making excuses for Palin? She was too busy? Like she's going to get less busy now?
And yes, I'm sure that there are plenty of Repubs that use birth control, and even some that get it for their kids.
But I'd bet the percentage is alot smaller among those that describe themselves as conservative evangelicals (which is probably where Palin is).
More importantly, official policy of this administration has been to refuse to provide AIDS prevention help to foreign countries unless any family planning funding was removed. That pretty much defines the attitude.

"I doubt Palin told her daughter not to practice contraceptive."
Probably true, though it would be illuminating and possibly useful useful to have heard that conversation.
I'm all for paternal respnsibility, but the 'Law & Order' answer to this situation involves Jail.

Let me bypass the pregnancy issue. It would seem McCain pulled the appointment of a possible president out of his ear without the due diligence required to vet the appointee. After only two face to face meetings. Now the question.
Do we really want a president who feels comfortable making BIG decisions with out doing his homework?
Perhaps this was his habit even when he was at Annapolis?
Does he feel that homework is something he is not required to do?
Might there be a connection between this and his being a negative ACE while flying?
Can you imagine the difficulties we would face had we a president who does not take care to get the facts before he makes big decisions?
With such a president, a great deal more than five airplanes will be at stake.

Actually, John, it seems fairly clear that McCain doesn't DO his homework. Not in any sense meaning that he's really learned and relies on it.
If you'll excuse the expression, he likes to wing it.

Not forgetting at all.
But you must be kind of disappointed at how much power the social conservatives have. After all, while Palin has a small amount of fiscal credentials, beyond those, it's hard to her pick a much of anything other than a pander to the social conservatives.

Jeff:
Get us a republican candidate who is qualified to do the job and we will listen, no matter how they stand on any one issue.
Single issue politics is killing us. Literally.
Dick:
Got a source for her telling McCain?

"It just keeps getting worse for the Democrats because they know they got nothing to counter Jesus, Guns, and Babies."
Chaz-you just summed up what it's taken 550+ posts to try and do. I can handle the babies, they're cute and cuddly, but "Jeezus Freaks with Guns" walking lock, stock and barrel with the government is what scares me.
Jstan-I believe Palin did tell McCain about her daughter and went with her anyway.
It just keeps getting better for the Republicans because they know they have Jesus, Guns, and Babies on their side...

No surprise: looks like the only ones happy with Palin are the righties:
" In a separate USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Aug. 29, about 40 percent of respondents said they consider Palin, a 44-year-old first-term governor, qualified to be president -- the lowest level since President George H.W. Bush picked Indiana Senator Dan Quayle as his running mate in 1988. One-third of the people surveyed don't think Palin is qualified, and the rest had no opinion.
By comparison, 57 percent of Americans considered Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden qualified to take the top office if necessary, with 18 percent doubting his qualifications.
Palin may not attract large numbers of disillusioned supporters of Hillary Clinton. Only 9 percent of Democratic women said Palin makes them more likely to support the Republican ticket; 15 percent were less likely to back McCain. Among all women, 20 percent said Palin's selection made them more likely to vote for McCain and 11 percent were less likely.
Half of those polled had never heard of Palin before her selection, the Gallup/USA Today poll found. "

Of course what Woody said earlier is quite true. Since she doesn't have much name recognition it will take several days before polls stabilize and voters make up their minds about her.

"And many of you are forgetting that there are us pro-chice republicans out there. "
I haven't forgotten. It's just that you never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever elect them to office. That's like being pro-charity and never actually giving any money or volunteering any time. It really doesn't matter since you don't actually project those views into a substantive reality.

It's been obvious to me for a long time that the Republican party uses Jesus, Guns and Babies to control their voters. Their stances on public education and sex ed. further points to their belief it's preferable and easier to control uneducated people. That's really not a big surprise.

I think one of his own guys shot him down, or just shot him because he was yet to take to the air, on the deck of a carrier.
A jet caught fire and it's missile shot across the deck, hitting the jet McCain was sitting in.

That's a very accurate statement LEB. I curse the Dems all the time for their stances and especially their political strategy's (or lack thereof). I certainly don't want a country that leans to far right or left, but slightly left works for me :).

Most people are centrists. However, it certainly seems like the far right has dominated the GOP much more than the far left has dominated the Dems.
Bill Clinton was pretty middle of the road on most things. The same cannot be said for GW Bush (maybe it could have been for his Dad). In 2000 I would have said McCain was at least middle of the road on some things. Currently he seems to be running right as fast as possible.
Obama, on the other hand, seems to be moving to the center, much to the dismay of some of his far left supporters. I'd say defining $250K as rich instead of $5M is a lot more centrist.

Nice spin by Rick Davis. Of course, what would anyone expect McCain's campaign manager to say? The fact is that McCain involved very few (if anyone) in his decision to pick Palin. That is precisely why so many of his close advisors were surprised by the choice.

Not true, that. PA Governor Tom Ridge is one. There have been plenty of others, names escape me right now.

Which is exactly what the Democrats use. They don't want Jesus mentioned anywhere. Only the military and LE should have guns. And women should be able to kill their unborn babies anytime they wish.
