I have a healthy disdain for pollsters but surely they're not that far off in predicting a pretty
close race, or do you know something the rest of us don't?

it is not "close"
the Presidency is determined by which candidate can get to at least 270 Electoral Votes
and the polling in the critical swing states shows Hillary Clinton with a small, not tiny,
very stable, solid lead
if the election were held today she would likely swamp Trump by over 140 "excess" Electoral Votes

But Clinton remains ahead of Trump in the clear majority of polls. She leads by about the same margin that Barack Obama did heading into the conventions in 2008, and by a somewhat larger margin than Obama did in 2012.
