for sure it is very easy to relax and drop one's guard about theft,
coming from a dense urban area, and being in a mellow place like JTNP.

my thought is that theft can occur in camp as well, tents and belongings
have been pinched.

thanks for this thread, Greg.

Russ, there's a more precise list at the shop, but in most cases I just put down the items that are a bit more unique. 'full rack of C4 cams' is pretty common, but I rarely see golite womens bags, petzl ropes (lol), etc...

Ah my bad. Echo rock parking lot, intersection rock, and the others were outside the park. I'd have to check the notes.

When is the JT community going to get it together enough to set up a good sting op?

Vacation spots attract thieves. Just like trash dumps attract rats and seagulls.

My advise is keep all the good stuff hidden and locked up in the car. People usually don't steal what they don't see. Plus get rid of the climbing stickers which advertise that you must be carrying a rack around.

I also think we all should be using cheap/old tents in Jtree. It's doesn't attract thieves and if it gets blown into a Yucca plant it's not a tragic event. (I am still sad over that one.) Plus if it snows... You are car camping so the worse thing that can happen is you need to sleep in the car. You really don't need and ultra light, all weather tent for "survival." Save the nice tents for the real thing.

Then again if you must show off your gear and never get a chance to use it anywhere else... Well, that an LA climber thing. You can afford to a get a few things stolen so don't bitch. Go ahead an decorate your site like a climbing store advertisement. Leave it out and please don't complain to me.

Ron, what a great idea.

Sal, I just picked up two AR's and an M1 Garand. Along with my 4 other assault rifles, we should be doing just fine.

I can't wait to see Anastasia shoot that M1. It's a match grade rifle just out of the grease barrel from the armory in Aniston, Alabama. It's been stored up nice and tight there since the Korean War.

One of the AR's is chambered in 7.62 and the other is 5.56.

Uh,.. you might not want to get TOO gung ho there.

The idea is to catch them, not a felony conviction.

Of course if they've got a prybar or the like in their hand,...

edit; and the trouble with breaking both hands is that for a long time others will be subjected to somebody unable to wipe after defecating.

And after breaking someone's hands so they can't care for themselves

you do have to adopt them.

Good tip on the old tents. I don't think I've heard of someone stealing from a tent, though I'm sure its happened. Pretend tweakers are bears, hide all shiney objects, even if they just LOOK like food, er, gear.

You trust me with a big gun? Oh... This is going to be fun! May I leave gear out and see what shows up that would be nice to shoot? Please... I promise to try my best to hit them.

sorry that happened to you, James.

I recall a strory from some time ago about Charles Cole's tent
sprouting legs and walking out of C4 with all his belongings in it.

if I am not mistaken, the inside word was "don't camp near the road",
meaning on that (south) side of camp.

so, Jtree is not the only worry, but have heard quite a bit recently
about a lot of ongoing problems with this in the Jtree area, in general.

times are hard for many right now, theft seems on the rise.
