Hi there Pat,
Hope you're feeling better. I wonder if the isolated bruise is a type of shock injury. Happened to me once. Fell off while bouldering and landed on one side of my ass. 2 days later the other cheek was just as black and blue as the side I landed on. I was told the shock spreads across the body, somehow through the blood vessels I guess.
Anyway, you've been around awhile. I'd probably stick with your instincts, though I'll get flamed now for advocating recklessness.

The Black Knight scene in Monty Python And The Holy Grail comes to mind.
"Just a scratch"
Listen Pat, I know that med costs can be daunting but look at the big picture.
If you want, I know an orthopedist or two that climb and would likely donate a phone consult to help you resolve your approach to dealing with this. You know the email.

Pat, I can't begin to count the number of my patients who have walked around on fractures. It doesn't mean it ain't broke. Bruising is just some bleeding and will trsvel the path of least resistence, usually assisted by gravity. Where the bruise appears is usually on the downhill side of an injury and we don't tend to lie on the most injured aspect. Hence, the bruise often is on the opposite side due to our positioning after an injury.
Good luck.

Pat,
For somebody who has written as brilliantly as you have and could demonstrate numerous variations of the Sicilian Scheveningen you aren't thinking too clearly!
Please go now!

People have finished Marathons on broken femurs, stop being so stoic. Bow to allopathic medicine.
Go to Reno and I'll have my Ex Wife (family practice MD) take care of you. on the cheap.

I would imagine that not setting a bone soon results in amorphous regrowth that has, sugically, to be scraped off.
Am I wrong?

I think the more immediate danger is blood clots.

Both are likely results. In addition, if the femur has more than a hariline fracture, a delay could easily require a re-break to set the break correctly.
While I remain encouraged by the seeming lack of shock, I'd feel better if I heard from you, Pat, and knew that an ER at least had a look at it.
I know I've never climbed with you, but I bouldered with Higgins often in 1972-73 in Berkeley, and anyone who Tom enjoyed the way he enjoyed you must be a good guy. Please take care of yourself and get to an emergency room ASAP.
Thanks.

OK, I'm going to the doctor tomorrow, and I will find a
way to get the X-ray done. I went to Colorado Springs
to work on my film for two days, and the femur hurt like
hell the whole time and got progressively more sore.
I can hardly walk again. I had told myself if it got
much better quicker I'd ride it out. And when I spent
time with Jim Holloway Sunday afternoon, he said it takes
about two weeks for hairline fractures of the femur to show up.
But it clearly hasn't felt better, rather worse,
so I'm taking everyone's advice. Tomorrow, but I just
drove the five and a half hours home and am totally exhausted,
kept falling asleep at the wheel... would jerk awake to
monstrous leg pain... that would keep me awake another stretch
of road, then it all would repeat itself... I'll answer
some of you more personally later, as I'm too tired right now...
Best to everyone,
Pat

hey there pat... say, welcome home....
i reckon you may not exactly take to hearing this too good right now... but say...
the o' supertopo's got a right-good thread/post going somewhere here about:
"not driving tired, falling asleep at the wheel and such, much more"...
say, pat... i just mean this:
we all love you, and we don't want you "messed up from your leg"
and thus truly said, don't want you "messed up from an auto wreck"...
please forgive, me, pat... but, well... i just had to throw my little card out on the table tonight... BECAUSE:
I JUST HEARD from someone, this week, that WAS in a bad auto accident (some folks, including him, could have died):
and, it is really something not wished for you, too... :(
*or anyone... :( :( :(
so very glad you are home, now...
:)

Pat, It's been how many days now?
I felt the same way as you when I steped of my skate board last year!
I was in total denial!I said "I can't aford to be hurt!I am in the middle of my surf season and I have jobs lined up! People are counting on me!" But, When my friend (finaly) draged into the e.r. the worst was realized and a plan was made to deal with it!
Please, don't procrastinate much longer my friend!
I am sending all my Aloha your way and I'm counting on a post stating your positive x-ray image results!

I just talked to Pat on the phone again and he has a call into the doctor to get a referral for x-rays. Hopefully in a few hours he'll know for sure what the damage is.
