Wow! That takes me back. I used to body surf that back when I was a kid, and may still be carrying a little sand. But spent more time at 17th St. Thanks for posting the video!

Trestles of course, but I think slater's talking about the first pic that looks almost too good to be the wedge. It could be taken at some Indonesian reef break.
Where's all the spongers? Don't look very steep.

Nothing like being sucked back over the falls when you get caught inside, and are trying to punch through one of those monsters, been there done that. Lost a few fins the too, sucked em right off my feet. people use leashes on they're fins there.

Rincon; you said:
Here's the way it usually looks on a big south swell. True! Spring or Summer? The shot I offered was in the winter at high tide. That day one could surf in the mouth of Newport harbor. It was a bit of a freak but it wasn’t the first time I saw the Wedge break outside in the thirty years I lived near there. ( just up the beach a bit.)
Cheers,Bruce.

Dogtown, of course the pic was Trestles, but you asked for the best break between OC and SD. I've had rides at Swamis that were at least as good as anything at Trestles, but 2-3x longer.
Never got out at the Wedge when it was big. I grew up in Torrance, so spent more time at the further north, winter swell version -- the Redondo Beach Breakwall. You sometimes get a similar bounce peak. The difference is that the main break is further out in deeper water. You do still get a nasty shorebreak however.

Used to hang out and body surf in NB in my high school days late sixties. Good days/nights of Led Zepplin blaring and smoke wafting from the beach rooms. Never quite had the sack to brave the those big days at the Wedge when those waves come up from nowhere and slam into the sand. One had to be careful of not getting slammed into the jagged rocks of the jetty with the angles there.
One day I was there watching when a group of Marines - probably from ElTorro on the way to Nam - went out in a rubber raft. A huge wave came up and threw them & the raft far and wide with bodies flying in all directions. The raft washed up on the shore and a lone Marine who had managed to hang on for dear life meekly peered over the edge wondering if it was safe to come out now.

Just a heads up...The Wedge is going off today!
South facing beaches getting pounded by a stong southern hemi.
http://www.surfline.com/surf-report/the-wedge_4232/
"8-12 ft.
3 ft. overhead to double overhead + with occasional 15 ft.
and fair+ conditions.
This morning's dawn patrol: Marine layer is making it difficult to get a look at. Expect solid wedges in the double-triple overhead plus zone. Mostly shutting down."

I grew up in Costa Mesa and knew enough to stay away from the Wedge. There must have been a general understanding about 17th, because that's where I usually went, maybe because I typically went with my sisters and they wanted to check out guys. I always found lots more women up north near Prospect.
Anyone been to the Beach lately? I have to drive down to OC next week and was considering checking it out if I'm around in the late afternoon.
