Ah, there it is again...
that pungent, and yet strangely fragrant, aroma of elitism wafting from my computer.
thanks DMT.

Do I use and like sticky rubber climbing shoes, harnesses, belay devices, perlon, and cams? Sure, but would I trade a stream of increasingly less clueless first ascents in JC Penny work boots, tied in with the rope, on clipped hip belays, with goldline, and just stoppers and hexes in exchange for learning to climb today in a gym, in crowds, and never climbing without a guidebook?
Not in this or any other lifetime...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I definitely represent the depths on which the foundation of SuperTopo Elitism was built upon...
P.S. You somehow left wild sex and better drugs off the list...

I shot myself between the eyes with my BB gun (before my brother took it apart and broke it to see how it worked). Actually I shot a rubber tire at point blank range, it bounced right back at me and hit me between the eyes.
I never built a go-cart, but my brother and I sat in the bed of a red Radio Flyer wagon, turned around the pull handle and used it for a steering wheel, and roared down a big hill, only to wipe out and get bloody repeatedly in gravel-covered asphalt

I'm ancient school...But I am sure some of these kids are our future and will represent accordingly. As for the rest all I can think of is, "Natural Selection."

sorry watusi, many gym climbers and the attitude of difficulty prevails over a mental belay will prevent natural selection from ocurring at the natural rate as bold routes are bolted into submission. There has already been many people subscribing to this on this site. I liike sport climbs but I also really like and respect 5.9's that scare the sh#t out of me. But nowadays this type of climbing seems to lose its appeal....

I think the teenagers of the 60's are pussies. Hippies and Free Love destroyed this country.

my 13 month old daughter is going to keep up the bar on that generation. she's already a kick-ass barefoot climber, takes falls without whining, and pushes her 3 yr old brother back.

It's too bad Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon were not "pussies". In any case, they sure had flawed masculine self-images that translated into the flawed foreign policy with which we're still cursed today.

It's not will the kids be all right. It's will the kids live in a world that will allow them to be all right.
Kids today are under pressures that we could not even imagine 50 years ago.

I first climbed in '69 with PA's and wouldn't wish that cave gear on anyone...Then in '81 JB turned us on to sticky boots!
The rest is up to the kids!!!

Maybe so, but I remember those days with great fondness.
